I've got a (slightly scratched up) curvy, and the mirrors are looking a little the worse for wear. I was thinking of refinishing them somehow - any ideas? Since they're unpainted, I was thinking of sanding them to a matte finish all over with wet+dry. Anyone else tried this? How else could I get rid of the scratches?
Also, I'm trying to get my bar-ends off. I've soaked with WD40 overnight, and used a blody big screwdriver, but no luck. Suggestions? Thanks |

With teh mirrors, you can rub them down to get a different finish, but it's pretty hard to get it consistent and any deep scratches are going to give you fits. Far easier to spray them up in the bike's colours...
As for the bar ends, an impact driver is hte SV owner's friend.

Thanks guys... can I expand on that then?
The mirrors - the best thing is to take them off the bike and respray them? How should I prep the surface then, the deep scratches are going to need filling for an even surface. What sort of filler do I need? Once they're filled, should I sand the whole thing down and then spray paint? Will car paint do, or will I need to prime them first? Oh, and how do I dismantle the mirrors so I don't spray the glass and the ball hinge too? As for the bar ends, anyone in Bournemouth with an impact driver? Cheers for helping the incompetent! cb9002 |

I don't think the SV mirrors actually dismantle... But you can mask the ball joint and mirror fairly easily. I did one as a practice run when I was starting to consider spraying the whole bike, and used Isopon filler and Halfords aerosols- primer, main coat, clear coat. It has a little orange peel but not bad at all. Don't try and colourmatch with over-the-counter car paint- better to either get the exact match (I think Banditmania do SV colours in aerosols) or go with, say, gloss black IMO. A close-but-not-quite match looks worse than a very different colour I think.

Yeah, was thinking gloss black myself. I've got OEM lowers so I think the bike is red enough! Strange the mirrors don't dismantle... I guess the best thing would be to hang the mirors on some string by the hinges then - that way I can spray all over at once. How did you mount them?

I screwed them to a bit of thick plastic I had lying about- just drilled holes in it for the mirror's own bolts. Worked really well, though you have to be careful when leaving the mirrors to dry as they're not very stable like that. I managed to drop mine on the dusty floor when I did the primer coat and had to cut it back and start again
