Default Detent spring or something else?

In the last few weeks I have been having gear selection problems. It's happening only when changing from 1st up to 2nd the gear will engage then pop back down to neutral as I open the throttle. Is this the detent spring on it's way out? No other gears are affected.

I've checked the chain, it's fine. Not too slack or tight. I haven't topped up the oil either so it's not that.

What else is possible? The bikes done 21K miles, it's a '99.

It happened again this morning. Embarassing really. I stopped at a pedestrian crossing, pulled away and then in front of a couple of dozen folk at a bus-stop it fell out of second and it revved up to 10,000rpm in neutral. My termi can wailed it's mighty shreek and the crowd dispersed in all directions - te-he-he!!

EDIT: Meant to ask how easy is it to change the spring on the SV?

could be the slipper pads on the fork selectors are worn... had the same thing on my ZZR600....

but just try the old, change the oil and adjust the chain, make sure your kicking it to gear correctly, and all the linkages are correct, and there's not to much slack in the clutch cable first.

then if all those are done then ... gear box strip down.

EDIT , Which springs, fork, clutch, shocker, sidestand, etc...?

Sorry, should have said the detent spring.

From looking on JHS's site I might as well do the star at the same time, should really improve things. Obviously only do this if that's the cause of my problem! Bit costly mind you.

Here's what they say.....

"Replace the low tech stock riveted disc arm with this Factory Pro bearing detent arm along with the slightly heavier detent spring to decrease shift mechanism friction for the quickest shifting. £85.00"

"Factory detent shift star - stop the false neutrals between first and second (a must for racing).
Stock feel is "notchy", due to shape of the ramps.
Detent spring rate increase makes shifting more positive - misses fewer shifts. £119.99"

(hopefully, i have sucessfully added an image here...)

Try this first:

Go somewhere out of the way, shouldn't be a problem considering where you live.

Stick it in second from first, roll the throttle on and off at all sorts of revs, loads of acceleration and engine braking, try it all again changing down from third. Under what circumstances does it pop out of gear?Always when hard on the throttle? Think about exactly when it happpens. If it will go into gear and stay there in either case there is a possibility that the problem you have is with selectors/detent, if it consistently pops out under power and/or over-run when you have put it into second from either third or first it's far more likely that the trouble is with the engagement dogs.
If that's the case then the detent bits from JHS won't help.

Also, with those bits they can be had far cheaper if you buy them direct from Factory Pro... $199.99 for the two vs £205 from JHS. They don't sell the shift star seperately though, but they do the detent arm for $90 vs JHS's £85 UK. IIRC their postage prices are reasonable, I bought some bits from their EBay store last year. Could be worth a look if you go down that route.

Of course, you lose the local support, but for you JHS aren't much more local than San Rafael I suppose
