Default My first frustration with my dealer

I ordered my SV650 on 3rd June - I didn't have a problem with a wait for the right colour/parts, was in contact with my dealer all last week (saw my SV being taken out of the crate)
Got the magic call today to say the bike is ready, "great I'll phone and activate some insurance" - just one problem they need my insurance certificate to register the bike!
WHY didin't you tell me that last week - I could have got the policy sorted and the documentation would have been here now - I'm staying with Bennetts so I now have a 4 day wait for my certificate - which then has to go to the DVLA to get the registration.
Another week waiting for my SV doh! thankfully the sun isn't shining 'cos that would have really pi**ed me off.

Isnt this bullsh*t? You used to only need an insurance certificate to tax a bike. They should just send off a reg form and your V5 arrives sometime? Has something else changed, then?

This is very normal, and to be honest, it is to be expected. And I think it is because it is an everyday issue to the average dealer, they forget to tell you about it.

When I put my deposit down on my SV, I was instantly given the registration number that would be assigned to it. I went away and insured it, and with the certificate, they went and registered and taxed it.

Bigger dealers can do this themselves... but I'm yet to find this in the motorcycle industry.

I don't think they need it for the registration, but they definitely need it for the tax and I know some places wouldn't be happy about letting you ride it away without tax on it.

Same for me, when the dealer told me this I got worried about having to find insurance within a few days and have them send me a certificate in time but when he said your registration number will be .... BSV it cheered me up a bit.

You don't need the certificate if you buy a used bike from a dealer though.

There is a double-standard thing with bikes and cars... every time I've bought and sold bikes there's been lots of checking: HPI, insurance, licence, restrictions, MOT...

When I got my car they just wanted the money and that was it, no interest in insurance, even whether I had a licence at all...

On the DAS course I was on, a guy had wanted to use his new Honda Scooter for the CBT and DAS training (he was only doing the DAS side of things to make sure he was well-trained for the road, more than he would be with CBT) and the shop refused to let it out of their possession until he had insurance, tax and his CBT... wouldn't even entertain delivering it to the test centre... must just be down to personal choice of the retailer though, can't see why the law would be different for cars and bikes, just bike places are/seem to be more concerned about people not doing things totally by the book.

I didn't get my tax until a few weeks after picking the bike up, I was riding round with one of those cheapy tax disc holders with "Tax Disc Holder" printed on the inside.

I had a similar issue - the dealer explained exactly what i would need (commendable) and then the insurance company got the details wrong. Hence no tax, no bike, another week's wait.

to be fair to the dealer he has said I can take the bike if I want,
but unregistered surely means uninsured? and knowing my luck plod would get me just around the corner from the dealer and I'd end up paying a fortune for insurance with motoring convictions on my license.

At least I've got this forum to cheer me up while I'm waiting.

Yes you DO need insurance to register the bike as you are also getting the first lot of tax when you register it.

Cant you get Bennets to send the docs through special delivery to the dealer, they do it for us. If the dealer isnt Afril registered (meaning they can register it online for you) then they do have to go to their local DVLA office, ours is wimbledon.
