Braking Woes - SV650.org

How ever much I bleed the brakes on my SV, I just can't get the bike to stop like i could...

I've fitted braided hoses, new seals, bled the system and I'm still not happy with the way the bike is stopping...

Whats my next step???

clamp the brake on over night with a cable tie or some thing

this should in thoery get all the air bubles out ... i think

Try the following, see if they help. Carbone Lorraine or EBC HH pads.

Other than this you're into big money territory with stuff like six pots.

If they feel spongey, do this. The pressure in the system will force the air to the master cylinder.

If you feel there is no power are you sure that you have not contaminated the pads or the disk with brake fluid? If you have you will need to thouroughly clean the disk with copious amounts of soapy water and change the pads.

In the past if I contaminated the pads on my mountain bikes disk brakes, I boiled them in water or got a blow torch on them. This had the effect of burning off the brake fluid. However, they were never as good as when they were previously. Also, it may not be a good idea to do this on a motorbike as you are going considerably faster. I once got WD40 on the rear pads and I rode a couple of miles dragging the rear brake. Worked fine again after that.

When was the last time you cleaned, and I mean really cleaned, your discs and pads?

Get some brake cleaner, and a big old rag... and get going with the elbow grease on those discs. Get an appropriate drill bit, and by hand, clean all the ventillation holes in the discs. Then clean it all some more - all discs!

Next, get a clean wire brush, and brush up your brake pads. You'll see all the dust come off. Then put it all back together, and give the system a check over. lubricate the parts where the pads touch the pistons, and the pads touch the calipers with very small amounts of copper grease.

Also clean and lube the brake lever at the point where it activates the master cylinder.

Do all that, properly, and then tell me that you can't feel the difference!

Just aim for a swamp...

You could maybe look at a different master cylinder- lots of the SV Rider guys have been fitting SP1/2 master cylinders and seem very pleased with the results. Or maybe different pads, what are you running now?

Also, with the lines are you using a 2-down, 1-2 or 1 down one across setup? Can't remember. All I know is they worked well enough to juts about kill you when you fitted them!
