Rearsets are footrest hangers which are set further back than the stock versions.
This is done to increase ground clearance and give a more aggressive riding posture.
Some people use the term to describe all footrest hangers, but that isn't really correct.

rear-set is an aftermarket replacement footrest, usually higher up, adjustable and expensive. It's designed to give the bike more ground clearance, so you don't scrape feet and pegs on the deck when going round corners. Usually found on race bikes.

Above comments are correct, Not all rearsets are adjustable but some are. They are generally more dedicated to racing than normal foot peg hangers and so often come with footpegs without rubber to improve feel etc.

You can also get "jack up plates" which are bits of metal plate used to go between the frame and standard root rest hangers to move the stock items up and back. Gives better ground clearance at a fraction of the cost, but not as "trick" looking

Don't bother getting rearsets, just lie forwards and put your feet on the pillion pegs like carsick does.

Can't help thinking that it's bad design to have the intake so close to the exhaust

I noticed a nice black mark on my exhaust the other day. Screw it, it's comfortable. Can't do it when I'm carrying a pillion, though, of course.

When I ride with the balls of my feet on the pegs, rather than with my heels on it, the heel of my boot touches on the exhaust almost all the time (unless I make a concious effort not to and even then, it's uncomfortable). Thankfully, neither pipe nor boot show any signs of melted soles yet. Any idea if it's the material of your boot that's causing it to melt?
