Default New Bike, New Rider, New Tyres

All,

Well as of Saturday I will be the proud new owner of a K3 SV650S. However I know that it needs a set of tyres. I am a newish rider and new to the SV scene so am a little lost from all the posts as to which tyres are good and which ones aren't.

Perhaps someone should right a sticky with all of the brands/models of tyres and collate peoples/industry reviews on them. Would be very helpful

I understand that the Z6's are a good tyre and thats about it

I would also like to find somewhere that stocks bike tyres and fits them in the Peterborough area? Anyone?

All comments appreciated!!!

You said you know it needs new tyres. Is that because they're worn out or you believe the scaremongering about the D220s? I personally feel that they are not bad enough to spend money on until they wear out. I've had more slides since I changed tyres (3x now) than I ever had with those fitted, purely because my riding style has changed over time.

There are alot of tyres that suit the SV very well, you'll obviously see alot of them mentioned here, BT020, BT010, BT014, Conti Road Attacks, Metz Z6, AV45/46, AV59/60, to name but a few.
Most are very good, some are getting out of date and others don't suit everybodies style.
Tell us a bit about how you like to ride and what conditions you choose to ride in and we might be able to give some more useful suggestions on what to try.

Thanks Carsick,

The tyres do definately need replacing. The previous owner dropped the price because it needs new tyres. They are still standard tyres and have done 6k and are worn...so it is a genuine reason!

Like I said, I am knew to riding. This is my first bike and so as yet, haven't found a riding style. Most of my journeys will be short and will involve lots ofs twisties (will be with my mates, they all have sport 600's/1000's). The weather conditions will be good, as to be honest, I don't fancy that bad weather riding. Not yet anyway. I don't mind too much how much they cost, as long as they are going to be worth the money. But if I get better performance with say Z6's but due to softer compund need replacing more often I wouldn't mind that.

Sorry to be wushy washy

I can't claim to be able to give expert advice, just a little pointer on what is good for me.
When I hadn't had the SV long I ended up switching to conti road attacks. Very nice tyre, quick to drop into corners and pretty damn grippy. A few people aren't comfortable with them, though, so they obviously don't suit everybody. I think some have said they can seem a little nervous to the inexperienced, though I didn't find that.

The BT020 is nice, it's reliable, grips well and wears ok, but it has a bit of a tendency to square off quicker than it should. It's basically getting out of date.

Avon Viper Sports (AV59/60) So far I can't fault them, other than when you get to the very extremes of lean (and I do mean extremes) they get a bit twitchy. I think that's normal, though. They have pretty fantastic wet grip and pretty phenomenal dry grip. I've found it quite difficult to make these tyres misbehave in the dry. I think they give alot of feedback, which I sometimes find a little disconcerting, but I'm now almost at the skill level where I can use the information rather than be overwhelmed by it.

My riding is mixed but I do quite alot of blasts through major country roads, so lots of bends but not many knee down type bends, apart from the roundabouts
I'm not very quick, but I have a tendency towards treating the throttle like a switch when I'm out playing.

That's all I've tried on the SV, hope it helps.

Before you can choose a tyre you have to decide what type of tyre you want. Sports, sports-touring, touring etc.
If like you said, money isnt too much of an issue Then go for a sports tyre, like the pilot sport, 010, 014 etc

I use sports tires as i also do long blasts through the twisties with 600 gixers. And with sports tires the SV is more than a match.

If you go for a sport tyre then id recomend the 014.
