Default Whoops - I've just run it in and binned it!

This message posting is part of my therapy to get over my accident on Sunday.

I had just been for an excellent ride from home to Market Harborough and back when I crashed my bike on a bend 400m from my house that I go round every day. Knocked myself out and cant remember much at all. Woke up to see sky and lots of legs and voices. Some kind bikers found out my address and delivered bike to house. Ambulance took me away for scans - lucky only to have broken 5 ribs but no brain, spleen or liver damage. Big Ape is right "Always wear your F** leathers" as mine saved me definitely. Biggest pain is I had just run in the bike and done 1200 miles and now its very secondhand.

Big question is: how the hell did I fall off on a known bend going relatively slow according to the car witness? Did I lose concentration? Did I black out? Did something run out in front of me? I consider myself a very careful biker and I am worried about how I could fall off doing about 60mph on this bend. Anyone who has suffered anything similar might be able to help.

Currently sitting (uncomfortably) at home waiting for bike to be picked up and assessed.

Yours in misery

There are lots of things that can cause you to come off, and if you were knocked out then it'd be easy to forget. A friend of mine now turns out to have epilepsy. He didn't know anything about it other than one day he almost went off a cliff when he blacked out on an easy corner.

Bad Luck - could have been worse

Go back and check the road - was there any signs of Diesel or perhaps gravel, maybe even horse poo, or a loose piece of debris perhaps

hope you get the bike fixed without too much trouble

Really sorry to hear this, at least you're alive and kicking, though them ribs will likely hurt for a while.

The front most likely slid on something, manhole cover/drain, diesel etc etc. Once you feel like it, walk down there and slowly scan the road to see if there's anything obvious. However at the end of the day don't beat yourself up over it, learn if you can and move on .

I don't want to worry you, but If they they find you have any type of epilepsy, they will take your driving license off you.

I have a mate who always had an arm which occasionally(once a month or less) goes a little numb for a few minutes, and has taken pills for it for 18 years. But he went 3-4 years ago for a meeting with a consultant for his once every 5 years review (or whatever it was), and they did some extra checks and decided he had some minor form of epilepsy which caused it, and these pills he had been taking were wrong, and all the side effects from them like weight gain and tiredness were all unneccesary.

If that wasn't enough they took his driving license off him there and then, with no warning and he had to arrange for his car to be picked up from the hospital car park and sold.
After a year and a half on the correct medication and no re-occurence of the arm problem they finally let him drive again. At no point had he ever suffered an epeleptic fit or even a blackout.

This guy is not a biker but he loves cars and was absolutely gutted that he couldn't drive.

This happened to Big Bob the technical officer of the Suzuki OC - he also fell off on a simple bend at sensible speed, and was one of the most competant riders I know. He has no idea why it happened either. Unfortunately for him he ended up wrestling a 40 tonner coming the other way and now has one arm and more metal in his legs .

**** happens sometimes. Glad to hear you're still in one (albeit battered) piece.

My sympathy mate. How sickening for you on a new bike! Having traversed along a number of roads on my a+s due to biking I must say that I can pin point the reasons for every spill I suffered...most of them my own daft fault!
I don't envy you not being able to attribute your fall to anything at the moment. That would really unsettle me.However there have been guys on here who have fallen and in the first days after could not understand why,but later it all came back and they realised what the problem had been.

Really sorry to hear that.

Hope those ribs don't give you too much gip.

Try to sort out what happened, it'll help put your mind at rest.
