Honda's LKAS differs from other similar devices is that it's actually capable of driving you out of trouble. Drift out of your lane in a C4 and your buttocks get buzzed. Do the same in a next-generation Accord and the car will steer you back on to the straight and narrow. All the while, the cruise control system will do everything necessary - even apply the brakes - to keep you a set distance from the car in front. This is 21st century driving, I Robot-style.
Now they can hog the middle lane on autopilot!!!! ![]() Go here for the full story http://www.channel4.com/4car/feature...onda-lkas.html |

I think drivers aids are getting too much... People start to think that they don't need to do anything. Just ask most people if ABS reduces your stopping distance or increases it. most will get it wrong, and use ABS as a reason for tailgating 'I can stop faster, I have ABS'. grr...

Yep that TV ad for Citroen (?) used to wind me up. You know, the one where he drives acrross the bridge with his eyes covered The car beeps or something if you cross a white line in the road
![]() Jeeze... should drivers need this? Not to mention all the new owners with this 'feature' crossing the lines to 'test' if it's working. |

As with many driving aids, it's ultimately pointless and not really an improvement in safety in the long term. This is the same reason ABS no longer confers an insurance discount...
To begin with, it'll confer some safety benefit, then, as it becomes standard in all new cars, driving standards will drop accordingly to compensate for this. If the government want more people off the road, they should be making legislation to make cars harder to drive, so fewer people pass their test and those that do, will be forced to concentrate a bit more. How about banning automatics and cruise control, except for the disabled? There's also the issue that for people who already do drive properly, there's the increased purchasing and servicing costs, not to mention the (admittedly slight) chance that any electrical failure in a vehicle with 'autopilot'-like qualities, that it may suddenly steer itself into a wall/override your controls. |

Did anyone else see that study in Denmark where they removed all the road signage except for traffic lights from a series ofbusy intersections and junctions to see what would happen? Accidents dropped by 30%! The idea is that if you cover the road with signs- drive here, don't drive there, watch out- then it encourages drivers to switch off, in the same way as a lot of bikers do on rideouts- you stop thinking for yourself. Remove the signs and it makes everyone stay sharp and on their toes. Interesting idea but I suspect it doesn't cater for the lowest common denominators out there, who really need a hundred signs to stop them from driving into a school bus.
