Default Reflector - Where and is it legal

Hi All,

The new Tail tidy has been added to the Blue Cow, and looks lovely. Just a question though.
Ye know the Reflector that hangs at the bottom of the snow plough that I have taken off? I guess by law you have to have that back on the back of the bike somewhere, but all the pics I see of you lot with the tail tidy, I can't see it??

Will I need it for MOT purposes or is it not required, also is it illegal to ride without it? I'm in the mind that it is Illegal to have it?

Any answers?

Mass

It's required for MOT and I believe it's required for construction and use regulations.
Most people don't bother putting one on, since funnily enough you have another red reflector not far above the numberplate. If you really want to put one on then some people put them onto the numberplate light or you can buy little ones and fill a space on the number plate with it.

I took the original reflector off the shovel, and mad a small bracket out of a piece of right angle steel - beat it (the steel, not the reflector!) until it was a better angle and then bolted it onto the bottom of the plate with the reflector attached:-

i fitted mine to the front of the no-plate light, i made a metal bracket and bent it so it came out in front of the light (because you could still see some white light from the back) i screwed the bracket to the top of the no-plate light with a m3 screw and sealed it so no water could get in
i fitted it so if plod do pull you over its 1 less thing for them to mention and it does'nt look out of place

It probably is illegal, but I know for a fact it passes MOTs because I know several people who have done it. Not a single one of them has ever had it even pointed out as questionable, nevermind illegal.

What I have found....
Quote:
Statutory reflectors
Mopeds and motor bicycles require one unobscured red reflector which is aligned to the vehicles longitudinal centre line and is positioned to reflect squarely to the rear. If the motorcycle is fitted with a side car the side car will also require a reflector fitted towards the nearside and positioned to reflect squarely to the rear.

Reason for Rejection
1. There is not one unobscured RED reflector (in the case of a motorcycle combination one on the machine and one on the side car) positioned to reflect squarely to the rear

2. A reflector
a. so damaged, dirty or deteriorated that its function is impaired

b. obscured

c. insecure

d. obviously incorrectly positioned
So I could have been failed on the gounds of sub section d.
Could have got round this by puttin a little reflector in the middle of the rear of the bike, even on the plate.
