I just picked up a set of barrels from Ebay which are supposed to be from a T reg bike. Now, I thought that everything up to 2000 had the black casings and dark grey engine, but these are the lighter grey, which I thought didn't come in till the K1s? Am I wrong?

It's bit of a mish mash with the very early bikes, for instance our first 650, an 'X' '99, had very silver wheels, however the 'X' '99 belonging to a friend of ours had much darker gunmetal coloured wheels, the bikes were only a few hundred frame numbers apart.
That said I'm not aware that the greyer colour was used on any of the SV motors until much later, but seeing as there were definately differing colours on otherwise same model/year bikes, I don't find it hard to believe that there were.

Hum. I'll email teh guy back and see what he knows- seems quite likely it's just a case of mistaken identity. Shame really, they're in really nice nick. Guess I'm back to coating or painting the really scabby ones...

I thought it was tied into the colour of your bike on early stuff.
Mine is a V '99, dark yellow, graphite wheels and barrels. Mate had a dark blue X reg, silver on both. So I always assumed dark bikes came with light wheels and engine and vise versa. However, just noticed.... Early bikes had a mixture of both on some just to confuse us! |

You would be normally able to check this by using a VIN number, each of the 17 digits represent something, although you would need the codebreaker or at least a dealers assistance with the parts catalogue.
However as you have bought the barrels from Ebay you will maybe struggle to get the VIN. Barrels are the part of the engine that contain the pistons, The correct term may be Cylinder Barrels :P |
