Default Hit 30... need bike!

Hi folks,

I thought I'd drop in and say hello after finding this (excellent) site while doing endless hours of internet research. It can only be positive news for my choice of bike when there are so many enthusiasts around!

I only have my CBT at the moment and I'm guilty of having ridden a scooter for the last 18 months, geared Vespa T5 Classic, so like to think I'm not truly a proper numpty like the twist n go guys

I always wanted a bike but never got round to it so being a scooter commuter was my excuse to finally get on one and I've been having big fun and also the urge to get the real thing ever since, especially since my 30th last year!!!

However... some chav cnut stole it last week while I was away for Chrimbo so it's time to get serious.

I think I'm pretty much set on getting me-self an SV. have looked at bigger bikes like the DL650 VStrom which I also love but don't really want to buy brand new for my first bike and the SV looks like a whole lot of fun, but I haven't actually sat on one yet so just wondered if you could answer a couple of queries?

I'm 6'4" and my first obvious question is will the bike be too small / will I look like a **** on it? I've read hundreds of positive reviews but none really answer this!

Should I do my test before I buy? I only ask because there are a few bargains out there at the moment and don't want to get stung when the prices go up in the Spring.

Can anyone recommend a good place in / near SW london to take the test?

Thanks for reading and for any help offered!

greetings inevitable

your story sounds like mine, scooters....urge to move on to a bigger bike.

i suggest "advantage wimbledon" for your bike test, i did mine with them and can't fault them. they were also a bit cheaper than some other places i tried. you'll have to google them to get the number.

Hi,

Ace Rider Training in East Ewell are quite good - I did my CBT through them as well as a Direct Access course. Unfortunately I didn't pass at that time but that was due to my inexperience and not their excellent training! (I don't drive a car, and am foreign so had to get used to weird English roads)

I'm 6 foot and have no issues with the bike, Jambo is well over 6 foot, prolly 6'4 or more and I'm sure he's ridden an SV or 2 so maybe PM him if he dont show up in this thread.

I left it till i was 32 to get back into bikes, why oh why did i wait so long i keep asking myself.

just be prepared for not quite as nice in the rush hour traffic, use about double the amount of fuel as your scooter, but a huge grin every now and then when you have a bit of open road ahead of you and (watch for the cameras, cops and civilians) vroooooooommmmmm

Hi, height issues - I'm 6 ft 3, and fit just fine on the SV.

A mate of mine did got a recommendation from Tippets (Surbiton) for CBT training, might be worth a try http://www.honda-tippetts.co.uk/

Hope this helps.

Hi Inevitable, as a 30 something whos only just passed their test. all I can say is that you polling around on a moped for 18 months has done you the world of good in terms of taking your test on a bigger bike. You will still need a few leasons to get used to the differences between scoot and say a GS 500 (a typical bike for your DAS).

I personnally rode for 6 months on a RS125. Learning road skills, positioning and stuff then took about 4 hours of leasons on a 500 then went for test, passed first time

As for the SV, well what can I say. They are a great bike and you cant beat the sound of a vtwin in my opnion. Easy to ride, predictable and useable power throughout the rev range. Large community of helpful bods. etc etc etc ...

Ive got ridges in my face from grinning so much everytime I go out on it.

Your last point was about buying the bike now. Well if your bank balance can stand it and you can resist the temptation to ride it until you pass your DAS I wouldnt argue against buying it now. This time of year there are some real bargains.
