Default Carbon Can on a v-twin.. bad idea?

A carbon fibre A'provic can belonging to a friend of mine didn't last very long on his sv, it started to crack so it was replaced with a Ti can. Was this a one off or do carbon cans just not last on a v-twin?

Mine did the same. In fact the can separated from the titanium front section as the CF split around the rivits.

Took about 12k miles to do that though...

My Remus carbon can (that Jelster and someone else had before me) has done maybe 30k miles and is only just beginning to show cracks where I've over-tightened it around the strap mounting bracket. Otherwise I'm sure it would still be almost perfect (thankfully I have an almost new relacement to go on).

With the 650 it's not a great problem (providing it's made well) but the 1000 has a much greater power pulse that can definitely cause problems.

So I can't speak for other makes, but Remus carbon cans seem to be made pretty damn well.

How many miles had he done before the cracks started to appear.

Oh strange, I thought you'd aquired it from A.N.Other Well it's still a great can, just a little world weary.

you should not fit a carbon fibre can onto a V twin, the vibes from the bike will in time crack the carbon fibre. The place that was seling you the can should have told you that, if of course you told them it was for an sv. that said carbon fibre bike parts should be ok.

Make that: - you should not fit a cheap ****ty carbon can onto a v twin.

I had a pair of twin carbon renegades on my 650 - did about 8000 miles with them with absolutely no problems. They still looked like brand new when I sold them to Kinesin.

I think that one of the key things with carbon cans is to make sure that the packing is replaced around every 5k miles - the rengade cans make this easy as they are bolted, rather than rivetted.
