Default TV Licensing

Can anyone tell me when TV Licensing went the same way as road tax and you have to be continuously licensed.

Do we have to declare SORN on a TV set now?

I applied for a new licence on April 3rd after my last one ran out in September. The renewal came and it states that it will run out in September this year.

I got a new job in September and work in Holland. never home to watch my own TV

I decided to get a licence to watch BSB on ITV. ( bad mistake)

Any TV Licence gestapo out there?

They work on the principle that if you have a tv you need a license.

Id phone them up and show you were abroad and couldnt have used it. Doubt it will work though.

Only thing that does is not to have one of the infernal machines anyway. :P

years ago, got a knock on my door, According to our records you don't have a tv licence.

Yes I do, it is from my old flat. Went to find it, couldn't. He took my details and said I would probably be summonsed if they could not correlate the details I gave them about the old address.

As he was sat in his car writing up his notes. I found said licence. Knocked on his window. "See I told you I had one" as I handed it over.

He looked at it, and said "You do know this ran out last week sir", Doh.

As it was obvious I would not have had a reminder he made me give him a cheque and 2 days later the new licence arrived.

Still better than the missus. She got fined £60 a year before I met her for not having one. The criminal classes of Salford. What can you expect.

there was an article in todays 'pun' news paper about one of their reporters spending 24hrs (not sure if in one hit lol) phoning the various competitions with ridiculously easy answers that you often find on the commercial chanels. turns out he spent more on those calls in that 24hrs than you pay for your tv license.
i personally think that the tv license is pretty fair for what you get...another way of looking at it is all these people that subscribe to sky or cable pay anything up to £450 a year on top of tv license and all you get is reapeats on them too.
its your choice,if you wanna watch tv or not.

just thought id throw in my groats worth

I regularly get the letters informing me that it's wrong to not have a license and that I might get fined. Apparently they're going to send somebody round soon.
The buggers aren't coming into my flat, though.

Not that I have a TV, of course, and I'll be screwed if I'm going to write a sodding letter to them to inform them of it. If they actually wanted me to be able to do it easily it would be possible to do online.

From what i've been told these people dont have the right of enrty in any way shape or form.

They can arrive at your place and ask as many questions as they like, that you are not obliged to answer, and they can look over your shoulder as much as they want. They can ask you if they can come in to check you dont have a TV (if thats what you are telling them as your reason for not having a license) but you can refuse them point blank and there is jack thy can do aboout it.

If they can see or hear the TV then your in for it but if its off and out of sight and you dont let em in to look for it, they can prove nothing.

Apparently even with all the sophisticated techy stuff they have in their vans they cannot 100% accurately know if the TV they are picking up is in your house or the house behind you. Even less so if you live in a block of flats.

Saying all that, i have one
And i do think its a ****take of a stealth tax tbh.

I was talikng to and amrican guy who just couldnt get his head around the whole idea of it. His simple remark was "In my country you need a licences for a gun or a car. Either of which in the wrongs hands can take a life."

"In this country you need a license to WATCH TV????!?!?!?!?! WTF is that about. How many people a year die here from the boredom of repeats on TV, and can you then hold the govt responsible cos they issued you the license?"

Just another pathetic way to take money out of our pocekts. Let the BBC have adverts and raise their own fu**ing revenue.

Lyn..

I know I am ignorant--

BUT

it truly does amaze me that you dont have a TV..... honest it does..

not in a bad way- in a respect way- ! I am Tv mad and have a video on all the time..but I often wonder if I didnt have one (of five to be honest) I would have so much more time to read, and educate myself and listen to the radio etc etc...

but!--- I would be out of touch with most of he convo at work cos its Tv oriented...!

so... what do you do with your time?..read and whittle clothes pegs from old logs?
