Default My shiny SV650S on the floor

Hi All,

Hoping for a bit of advice and sympathy... Rode home from work on thursday evening, parked bike on road as usual. Didn't go out all of friday, woke up on saturday to give it it's weekly clean, and noticed it didn't look right.

After frantic knocking on various doors, I have discovered that two neighbours found it on the floor when they returned from the pub around 10:30pm Friday night. No idea how long it was down or who (or what) did it.

Damage:
smashed indicator (quoted £29)
scuffed fairing (will have to live with )
broken clutch lever end (£20)
bent bar end (£17)
snapped gearchange (£42)

Questions:
Does anyone have a spare gearchange lever they are willing to post to me? Obviously this is the only thing physically preventing me from riding it. How easy is it to fit??

Damage is less than the excess on my comp policy, so I guess i'll be footing the bill if I can't find anyone who did it...

Luckily the R&G crash bungs made the incident a lot cheaper than it might have been.

Thanks for listening.

Rich.

That's bad news....

Going outside the insurance is always worth weighing up, it's not just the excess, it's the loss of no claims too. Also, if it's your first bike, and you lose your no claims and you want to upgrade at a later date, some insurers won#t touch you on a bigger bike without 2 years NC. So it's worth looking at the bigger picture.

I don't think I could bring myself to have my bike parked outside over night. I know for many they don't have any other option, but after having a garage for so many years I don't even think I would consider it.

Hope you get it sorted soon....

I woudn't claim on the insurance...
Why not move this to the Suff Wanted section. you might have more luck.

Sadly at the moment that's not an option - The house I'm in is a corner terrace and doesn't even have any outside space (no garden, nothing). So it has to be parked on the road, as close to the house as possible (although this time it was a good 100 yards away).

Seeing the excess on my policy, and the fact that i can't blame anyone, i'll just have to shoulder the cost myself. The police were called when i found out the morning after, but i'm not sure what they can do?!

For changing the gearlever:
Open ended 10mm Spanner
6mm Allen key
8mm allen key
Vice.

Loosen the push rod locknut at the rear.
Undo the gear lever pinch bolt. Slide it off from the splined shaft.
Take off your peg hanger.
To get the gear lever allen bolt off you'll need to put the peg bracket in a vice, don't forget to protect the jaws with a rag or cardboard.

Once this is off slide the hanger off the shaft and swap over the levers and push rod.

disclaimer: these destructions are for curvy's. Allen keys quoted might be wrong size for pointy's.

Most likely either kids walking back from the park tanked up on cider or a neighbour trying to park or turn round hitting the bike. A cheap CCTV system would have helped you there as it could very well have been one of those "kind" neighbours that "found it" led on its side and put it back for you...

Had my old CD175 knocked over at work once. I got to the bike and found the mirrors moved and it was on the side stand but I left it on the centre. I assumed it was a work mate having a laugh but when I rode away I found I couldnt select second gear because the lever was bent in under the engine casing.

I reckoned it was someone reversing out of a space and hit it or a woman trying to reverse out tried to move my bike a bit to make space but it fell over on her as the seat was pushed to one side and that wouldn't have happened from falling on its own.

Why would it have been "a woman"? Surely it could have quite easily been a man. In fact, statistically it was a man, given that there are more male drivers than women on the roads!
