a Sportster 883?

find the 883R if you really must embrace the joys of under powered riding, the funky pipes, tuning, seat option and dual discs save you about £2K on buying the standard and fitting the extras later.

oh, important, pre-2000 models had the old 12L tank. good for a run to tescos and push it the rest of the way home. Later models had 14L as standard and 16 optional.

BUT, if youare starting down this dark path, consider the Triumph Speedmaster instead....

Don't you have to have a beard, smell of fish boxes and smoke funny fags to have one of these

By the way when you try to enlarge it comes up with an advert for health insurance-----------------------------AN OMEN PERHAPS

As the resident Harley apologist, I have to admit that he's right. I tried a test ride on an 883 once, and it put me right off. You wouldn't believe quite how slow they really are. The 1200 is probably a bit better - can't remember if I've ridden one of those.
