Default Highways Agency Vehicles -Patrol

Hi Folks,

I've noticed over a short period of time, the number of Highways Agency vehicles patrolling the M4 is increasing.
I don't know if thi sis a good or bad thing and really my only question is - who's paying for this?

I can see a little of the logic in the idea, being first on the scene to accidents, making sure the roads aren't full of debris, stopping - starting traffic.

Just a thought really.

Its also ment to relase some of the work from the police, allowing them to attend more serious problems. Get rather a few on the M3 too.

But the buggers look like coppers, making everyone slow down to 70 or less on the motorway, and causing all the traffic to back up...

I guess they dont have any juristiction over speeding etc...?

Yep, seen this in Sussex. A van with a police type paint job and something like 'Traffic Enforcement' on the back
.... can they hand out tickets, etc?

How do you 'enforce' traffic?

Loads of um on the M1 as well! When the traffic first spot them, they slam on the brakes and than realise there not the old bill, and speed up again.

i work (indirectly) for the highways agency.

the HA pay for these, theyre a government department so i suppose we pay for them.

ALL of these vehicles are vascar equiped and have registration recognition equipment on board, they have calibrated speedos and video that records constantly, if they witness anything untoward the data on board can be retrieved and used as evidence. they are in direct contact with the police control centres

i have a theory that eventually the police will no longer police the motorways and the highways agency will eventually take this on board, but its only my opinion.

the road traffic act was amanded several years ago to assist with the introduction of theses HA patrols.
