How do mate, I'm a sparky to trade, done a couple HNC's and a BEng before moving into Control Engineering.

First thing to remember/realise is that there are electricians and there are electricians, just as there are Engineers who put rockets in to space and Engineers who put wheels on wheel barrows! You need to work out what type you want to be.

My background is factory based production support, which requires a good knowledge of the all the principals to help you effectively fault find on all the production machinery. You can also expect to get involved in PLC, HMI and inverter programming, as well as a little inspection and test, and installation work.

Work as a pure installation spark, and you'll spend most of your time cutting bits of conduit and cable tray, drilling holes, and pulling cables through said holes and cabletray. A real skill in it's own rite, but you don't need to now much about electrical principles to do the job. Can be well paid if get in with the right people.

There's automotive sparks who focus on...well automotive stuff.

Panel sparks, who spend there lives fitting and wiring components in to electrical panels. Dull and not particularly well paid.

I can't think of any other types right now...

Obviously I recommend the backgrouond I came from, but so many of these jobs involve shift work now, and I don't recommend that!

If you've any questions just ask, I'd be happy to help if I can!
