Default Why is my clutch very sticky (sometimes)

Been having problems with my clutch for a while now - sometimes it's smooth as can be, sometimes (and this is a little hard to explain) I have to put a little pressure on the lever then wait half a second before it'll change. Other times it just goes solid, can hardly get it to change.

Adjusting the cable at the grip end sometimes helps but it's weird that (on the same adjustment) sometimes it's fine, sometimes not. I adjusted the nuts at the front sprocket end some time ago so maybe that's where the problem stems from. Open to opinions here - is it just down to adjustment or is it something else? Read on another thread it can get 'notchy' if the push-rod is bent (not sure what that is ).

take the cable out at the lever end and at the clutch mechanism end, spray about 300ml (or how ever much it take sto get it free'd up) of wd 40 down it and move the cable up and down inside the sheath !!

that'll clean it out, if you have any, then apply some workshop spray grease down it and move the cable up and down inside the sheath again for a bit, re connect ans it should* be like new.

Might help

* additionally, your cable might be donald ducked and need replacing, (not unsual or expensive)

Use those number to play the lotto and you'll end up on an island in the middle of nowhere

Just gave it a try there Alex, don't know if there's much improvement (but then I'm not sure if that much oil actually got down the cable!).

I noticed the shifter (the mechanism the cable's attached to) was a little rusted so got some WD in there. I'm also wondering if the grub screw in there is supposed to be tight or needs any adjustment because I think it's that that's causing the resitance.

Right, it is a bugger getting any lube down the cable, as for the grub screw it might be that, but im not sure how "tight" it needs to be,

It might be worth getting a new cable, i recall mine being about £10 genuine part, and really only does take 10 minutes to fit, its probably the cheper option before exploring anything potentially more pricy,

Hope that sort of helps,

Cheers
Alex

Thanks Alex - I'm 80% sure it's not a cable problem though. I've had the cable go on my last bike and it's nothing like that - no lack of tension, spongey feeling or anything. I'm thinking if it's anything to do with the cable it's maybe needing adjusted at the shifter end as, I'd guess, that may not allow the clutch plates to separate.

It sound like it is the worm gear bit then (the mechanism that the cable operates). Take it apart and grease it up (try not to loose any of the ball bearings ).

Inspect for damage, if all is ok, reassemble, then adjust as per manual:-
