My brother has just phone, Arkwright (as in open all hours) otherwise know as mien host of the Duke of York has packed up his bags and left. Turns out he has had a disagreement with the brewery regarding a proposed increase in his tenancy.
What ever am I to do. It took us a month to educate the previous landlord that when the plod knock on the door at 1 in the morning it is because they are thirsty. We tend to take a dim view of application of licensing law round these parts. But new landlords always seem to think they are supposed to get all bolshy round midnight. Once trained, they seem to realise their responsibilities towards the loyal customer and have the bacon/egg butties prepared for about 7:30 to soak up the beer for the stagger home to bed ![]()

What licesnsing laws? Didnt they all change about 6 months ago to all night drinking?

The thing is that if a place was known to have an all night licence then all and sundry would turn up, they would need to employ door men and the place would change. If you simply want a quiet(ish) drink. no problems if you forgot your wallet/ran out of cash etc. Then it is still a village boozer where people are known and their honesty/integrity not questioned. All night licences are for city/town centre pubs that can afford to hike up prices to pay for all the extras that go with it. We just want to continue paying £1.90 a pint and keep drinking until time to do the milking etc.

Perhaps Tim it might be an idea if you saw things from the licensee's point of view ?
From my time in the trade may I offer the following ? :- 'After hours' (as Lyn has said not quite the same now as it used to be) is a privilege that is granted at the discretion of the Landlord - it is NOT the God-given right of any person whether he/she considers himself to be regular of the establishment or not !! In the pubs I ran NO-ONE assumed that just because I decided that to have a late night that they could automatically stay - it was by MY invitation only. Anyone who blatantly asked or tried to manoeuvre the conversation around to 'afters' definitely wouldn't be invited !! It also takes time for a landlord to get to know his patrons & the various cliques / relationships / hierarchies that exist within any 'community'. Anyway, best of luck with your intended 'training plan' - hope it works for you. Just be glad I never ran your local !! ![]()

You can have as many late nights you want, but don't get caught drinking the stock and don't forget the early morning deliveries. ![]() |
