Default A really stupid question...

What do the rubber sheathes (sp) on the springs used to hold aftermarket exhaust systems together actually do?
I thought maybe to help stop corrosion but they seem to trap dirt and moisture more than anything.
Maybe to stop the springs being broken by flying stones, etc?

They stop the springs vibrating and rubbing against parts of the exhaust... and look nice
