Rear seat won't open

Hello. I'm just bought a used 2000 SV650 that only has about 3600 miles. I've ran into a few problems that I didn't notice. The biggest one right now is that I cannot get under the rear seat. I don't have the owner's manuel, but my understanding is that the key is supposed to unlock the seat. The locking mechanism seems to be stripped out. What can I do now? Is there another way to get the seat off? Has anyone had this problem. It has me pretty frustrated as I think I might need to change the spark plugs in this bike. Please help, the previous owner won't call me back (bad sign)!

I had a similar problem on my Triumph Trophy a few years back and it was possible to remove the seat lock mechanism and, with a bit of brute force, extract the cable. Once the cable is exposed if you pull on the end it should release the catch under the seat. This wouldn't work on a pointy as the seat lock is faired in and you need the seat off to get the lock off. Not sure about curveys though.

If you take off the riders seat, look in behind the bodywork where the seatlock protrudes. There is a spring clip plate holding in the barrel. You might need to take off the bolt thats holding on the sidepanel (usually hidden under the seat) to get your fingers in there.

Try to slide the clip off and you can push the barrel thru the panel. Take the cable outer off there, then pull on the inner to pop the seat. It's a vey neat fitting cable so you might not be able to do this, worth a try though.

Long nose pliers and paitence. You can get to the cable on the lock, and hoping that its not snapped, you can pop the seat

just to say. you have to turn the key. then manually remove the seat. it doesnt just pop up when the key is turned.

so turn the key, and whilst holding the key in the turned position, remove the seat.

hope thiis isnt patronising, but i t caught me out for 2 minutes when i first got the sv. my brother laughed at me when i said it was broke!
as far as i know, both curvy and pointy is like this (i have pointy, brother has curvy)

A wee bit of wire with a noose in the end worked well for me, when I stupidly forgot to reconnect the lock cable one time...

(edit: I used it to hook teh lock cable, not to end the pain)

I managed to get the lock out by breaking it to pieces. The wire was not hooked to it, probably the previous owner unhooked it and shut the seat. I'm going to try finding the wire as suggested and get a pull on it. I'd be glad to get any more advice from those who have more ideas. Thanks!!1

the spark plugs aren't under the seat! much harded to replace than that!

I finally found the unhooked cable with the help of someone pulling on the fender. I had to lay on the floor with a flash light and some needle nose pliers. I could barley see something and managed to pull it out. Victory at last!
