Default Rubber?

I've just treated myself to a second hand CBR600RR, 2003 all seems to be in fairly good condition which is now sitting next to my SV in the garage.

The CBR currently got new dunlop sportsmax 204's on? does anyone know what these are like, I've got a track day booked for next moth and want to have some decent rubber, does anyone know what these are like? the guy who i bought the bike of said that i should consider swapping them if i want to do trackdays, but their practically brand new so i don't want to have to buy new tyres if i don't have to?
I've got a pair of diablos on my sv are they better or worse than the dunlops?

I reckon the diablos are better than the dunlops. I don't like dunlops much.

Do they still make the 204s?? Blimey, I had a set of them over a decade ago!!!!

If you want to get the best out of your bike I’d get a set of Racetechs, or Supercorsa’s

You don’t have to throw the 204s away, but like I said, if you want the best either of the above should see you right

A friend of ours works at Dunlop, and could get tyres for pennies...................he rides on Diablo's!

My initial thought was 207s ? Brain wouldn't compute 204s for a few seconds.

How much does a CBR front wheel cost? There's a lot to be said for having a spare with something stupidly sticky on for trackdays, and more sensible tyres for the road. Ideally, both ends, mind. I'm presuming the RR will see road use too.

I've never been impressed by a Dunlop, yes they come in sticky flavours but I don't like the shape. Matter of taste, that, of course.

Question... And being honest here (you don't actually need to answer, I'll give you both my responses) how fast do you expect to be on the trackday? Most novice group riders would be perfectly happy on sports touring tyres, in my experience. Certianly, they'd be fine on something middly-sticky like a Diablo or Sportec. You do need to be cracking on to outride modern road tyres. IMO, there's not an awful lot of point in spending extra money for stickier tyres if you don't expect to be really caning it. But if you do want to seriously crack on, then a stickier front (and maybe rear) is way cheaper than chucking it into a gravel trap.

D204s are a tire that's been obsolete for a long time, the tire ain't new, it may appear to be new, but it isn't it's been sitting in a warehouse a long time,

Tire technology has come a long way since the 204 and it's doubtful it is even as good as a 204 was when they were new, by now, it's likley that the environment, uv rays, heat, cold, has made the rubber deteriorate

From the sounds of it sounds like new tyres would be in order, which in that case which would be best, either get some all round tires that will be fairly sticky on the track and fine on the road to which is where they will get the most use, or get a set of sticky tyres specially for the track (probably intermediate) and switch back over to the Dunlop’s for when I’m on the road?
I assume that although the Dunlop’s sound ancient they will still be fine for road use too?

Well... Still depends on what you want to use it for. I've got a spare set of wheels for mine, with my annual milage it's cheaper to have a set with Roadtecs, and a set with something softer, than it would be to run with one set of Sportecs or similiar, and I get the best of both worlds- the savings paid for the spare wheels within a year too. Just got some Rennsport Roads for the spares Though in all honesty, Diablo Corsas would probably have been mroe than enough, the Rennsports were cheap.

But then, in a full year I'll do fairly high miles, in conditions that sticky tyres don't appreciate.
