Default R&G Problems

I've read quite a lot of posts on here about R&G's on SV650's that have failed (i.e bolts bent or sheared) in the event of a spill.

Is it worth writing to R&G and presenting them with the evidence so they can do somthing about it ?

I'll do it if you want ?

I can confirm this, today my left R&G just snapped off and wasnt even fast. Was going to try and knock together some form of formal complaint e-mail tomorrow to at least get a free bung / bolt (would be nice if i could get more towards the dmg to my bike)

I would support you with this! Maybe i can get the cop that was with me to give something aswell as he was shocked by my bung flying off soon as it found ground.

For all the good they do you might aswell screw a long bolt in with a locknut ...would cost about a quid !

If they are not very helpfull you could mention the 'not fit for use' legislation !

By the way sorry to hear of your 'off'

I think R&G will be fully aware of these failings and they probably have some kind of instruction with them in small print that says 'not gauranteed to prevent damage'.

People are sneaky like that.

They prob will but as i said in my thread...

Quote:
Crash Protectors
We manufacture and market individual, bespoke designs for around 150 different models of motorcycle. Our crash protectors even received an MCN rating of 97%. These are not "mushrooms" and, unlike most competitors, we use de-embrittled high-tensile steel bolts, designed not to snap off on impact. In addition, we insert compression sleeves inside the bobbins, which are designed to scrub speed from crashes quickly and minimize damage to frames and fairings in most crash scenarios.
is quoted from the R&G site...

Yer not snap off and scrub speed? where as mine snapped soon as it touched flood and in that case scrubed no speed. :P

They did send the spares i wanted next day but would not give a discount after my bung snapped. Waste of time complaining as they have buisness all round the world and will hardly listen

Maybe if just one person wrote, thats why I think we should write on behalf of the "org" as we a very large online community, who represent the one of the best selling bikes in Europe. ALso we need to present as much evidence as possible.

I think on the whole R&G's are great, I've seen the aftermath of one or two offs on different types of bike where the bungs are of a different type (ususally shorter and fatter) and the R&G bung has worked perfectly and saved a lot of damage.

If R&G are unwilling to listen there are plenty of avenues to make them.

Just out of curiousity. What effect does over-tightening the bolts that hold the bungs on do? I seem to remember fitting mine and R&G emphasising that "you musn't over-tighten the bungs or they will fail". Now, I'm just wondering whether:

A: the bungs are fine and we are putting them on too tightly/loosely
B: this is an easy thing for R&G to blame when they snap off or
C: maybe they just aren't that good after all?

Any thoughts?

Luke

It's C...

It took years and dozens of ridiculous failures for R&G to replace the old design, remember. But still well worth letting them know, I'm sure. Maybe someone could gather up photographic evidence and descriptions of incidents and hit them with it? I would, but i already replaced the things as a bad deal- but I've got pics etc which I can supply if anyone wants 'em. Mine didn't fail completely, it just bent excessively in a low speed crash to the extent it might as well have not been there.
