Well I had a couple close calls on the M25 today doing 85ish and people coming up behind or cutting around and my bike refusing to accelerate anymore (it does go up to 105 restricted but its more of a crawl after 85) - By the time i got home I was very angry.
Just thought **** it, ill see what its like un-restricted so 10min later I was back on my bike testing an unrestricted SV (for those that disaprove, i'll say it was on a private road) and the bike is so different! Power delivery is so much smoother all through the rev range, it keeps pulling up the high end (where as restricted it drops off after 7k) and it gives so much more confidence. Of course leaving it un-restricted goes against my licence which of course is a bad thing but i feel much more comfortable and safe on the un-restricted bike. Hmmmm. |

Abyss, not even considering the restriction thing, why do you feel its bad to be sitting at 85?
I often cruise along the motorway at say 80 and there's no issue. I'd go as far as to say at 85 on the M25 your perhaps pushing it. You'll see many a supersports capable of over 160 sitting at a steady 80 on the motorway. Thats licence protection perhaps or just the fact that sometimes there' just no point in going any faster on a boring piece of road. 85, respectible speed. Im surprised it caused an issue ![]() Dont end a ride angry. |

Which lane do you normally stay in? Like Dr Rich I hardly go above 85mph on the M25, I bimble along in the slower lanes and have no problems, although I like to know I have the power to accelerate quickly to overtake. Motorway drivers do drive too close. You can take another test when you're 21 and you'll be legal then.
P.S At least you can keep up with us tomorrow!! ![]() ![]() |

i sit at 70,80ish but if you were stuck at that speed with no options overtaking may be a pain, sometimes you need 90ish to get round traffic quickly and more safely say if your in lane one and fast traffic is filtering from a slip road on to your lane you may need to get out of the way instead of hitting you brakes and slowing down faster traffic behind you. i remember the "running in" period on my sv i wouldnt want to do that again

If people are sat on your a*se its better to ride at your own speed and move over to the left and let them past. Why does it annoy you that they are coming up behind you and cutting around you. Just let them get on with it. If I were you I'd be more worried about why people were coming up behind you and cutting round you. Sounds to me that you need to work on your motorway lane discpline maybe ? Riding angry is not big and its not clever and it will get you into trouble. Those close calls can easily turn into tasting tarmac. You've done that already. You dont wanna do that again now do you ? Just because I have a bike that is capable of 170mph if I want to. Doesnt mean I have to ride it flat out all the time. I tend to stick to 90ish on the motorway anything else is uncomfortable for long periods of time. Also keeping at that speed means I have more time to watch what the other traffic is doing. Just because its got the power to get me out of a situation where I dont feel comfortable doesnt mean I oughta use it. Often I find its better to not get into the situatoin where a car driver is sat up my chuff in the first place. Personally I'd be putting that restrictor kit back in if I was you. But hey thats your choice isnt it. Your license is restricted for a reason. If you dont like it. Well then wait till your 21 if you are not already and then do your full test and then take your restrictors out. If its really bothering you that much find a route that doesnt involve riding on the motorway. Motorway riding is boring anyway. ![]() Just take it easy and arrive at your destination in one piece. Ride within the limits of the bike and most importantly your own limits.

Sound advice My Sv started restricted and it was almost good enough as it was. Take the performance uplift much longer down the road it will keep you interested a couple of years down the road and save you upgrading. Just a thought. |

I cant be arsed to find the link but you e.d. posted it recently - Avon and Somerset police are testing for this, was called operation Torque. With only 2 out of 30 bikes and mopeds stopped and tested being ok I can see this will be repeated and spread to other forces.
Bearing in mind if it does, if you get stopped on an unrestricted SV you will probably have the bike seized [they also seized 6 bikes in the above operation btw]. Firstly because you aren't licenced to be riding it. Secondly, it has invalidated your insurance. Lie to the insurers and yourself that its ok by all means, just dont come on here if you bin it and youre found out or youre stopped and the bike is seized. You will get no sympathy if that happens as you made a deliberate choice to do this. Equally you will get very little sympathy if you get caught doing over a hundred and get a ban. Rather than complain about it not going fast enough, take a step back and appreciate you had a control that could stop you losing your licence very quickly. |

Dont want to step on anyones toes being a newbie, however, its been mentioned god knows how many times before about people riding de restricted bikes on a restricted license, and every time someone even whispers it, theres a battle on. Im sure Abyss is aware of what could happen, its been mentioned so many times before.

RE the point about 85, the reason I sold my 250 commuter a month after I got it was that it just didn't feel safe doing 80 with no puff left in it. You need to be able to twist and GO to get you out of bad situations and converging artics etc!
An unrestricted bike can pop you from 70 to 100 in the blink of an eye, even more important than good brakes in my opinion as it's more dynamically stable to accelerate. |
