Default Need a new job... suggestions please.

Hi all,

currently work in retail security for John Lewis but don't know what I want to do.

Suggestions welcome, however ridiculous.

No A-Levels or Degrees so that rules me out of a lot of things. Should've paid attention at school.

Get a CV together, if you have a serious interest in the Security world then you may want to look into doing Hotel security/Loss prevention.

Or...

Spend some money on a Close Protection course and get out to Iraq or Afganistn (£80K a year).

Cheers, Loss Prevention's what i'm already doing, each company has it's own name for it. Will do a search for the other.

Im in exactley the same position as you, but not in security.

i hate my job, its making me depressed, i cant really afford to be on any less than i am now (which isnt a lot)
i dont really know what i want to do
all i know is it has to be practical and not really office based

im looking into possibly being a butcher at the moment

As per a recent thread:

If you know you're not happy then first of all you need to consider what it is you want to do instead. Give that a lot of thought and research before deciding.

Next consider what you have to consider how to do it. Do you need retraining/qualifications/certifications to show you can do the job? If so, consider how to get them - though I suspect studying while working will be the only option. However, consider most employers look favourably on getting qualifications while working - shows you can manage your time and commitments well and are prepared to put a lot of effort into it.

Also consider the cost of how to get those certifications and whether you/your family can afford it.

All the above text was removed from my brain. So saved me the effort...

Heres my problem, ive not know what ive wanted to do for the past 6 years and still dont, all i know it has to be hands on.

i cant afford to not work i have too many comitments, i also cant really afford to pay for training. And i cant afford to take a cut in pay. My employer couldnt give a monkeys whether i want training etc. And im probably going to be out of a Job when they privatise the MOD training, in the next year.

so im sort of shafted either way

Presuming youre a f/t civil servant then?

AFAIK, they cant just sack you under these PFI agreements. If its similar to the t&c which customs were under they have to give you a choice of staying with your department and being surplus and having to move location or you become an employee of the company winning the tender. If it is under those terms the only difference is you wont be counted as a civil servant so thereby Gordy retains the jobs needed for departments to function AND gets his 100,000 job cuts in one go.

Damn, all this cynicism is getting to me.
