What's worse is that it's perfectly possible- not even hard, in fact- to make a bump-proof lock... But lock companies are still marketing products that aren't bump-proof. If it's any consolation, old worn-out locks are supposedly harder to bump, as there's so much flex and rattle in them.

I, um, have to pop out for a few hours this evening, catch you guys later — oh and I might just be ordering a new SV1000 next week...

If it's true (and that's an if) then it's a huge problem. But one that is mainly solved by having an extra mortice lock rather than just a barrel/rim lock.

Ha ha, should have known Northy is the Oracle of All things Bump.
I was trying to work out a way to bump proof locks. I was thinking a really heavy motor oil, something gloopy, to make all the bits sort of stick together a little bit, but not so much as to cause the whole thing to be crudded up.

Am I on the right track?

Not really sure... I don't know how, i just spent a pleasant afternoon talking to a couple of safe breakers after one of my colleagues managed to lock the keys inside a 5-ton safe Abloy (half-moon) keys can be given a full-length first tooth, for example.
