Default Factory twin can set-ups - show or go?

Morning,

is it correct to say that the vast majority of factory fitted twin can systems actually produce less horsepower and torque than a comparable single pipe set-up? I'm thinking of bikes like the SV1000, Hornet 900 and current model ZX-10R. Would all these bikes produce better engine perfromance if they moved to single can set-ups?
I ask as a US company offers a single can conversion for the Hornet 900, while retaining a dummy second can as an extra lockable luggage holder, and they claim hiked power and torque from the single can set-up. Does anyone know the logic/engineering hoopla to back-up this notion?

There's a lot of tech with exhaust setups. Basically though a system that keeps the header pipes longer will produce more torque at the lower and mid range while a single system is better for high end performance. With bikes like the current R1 I guess they figure they've already got enough top end and wanted to beef up the midrange a bit. The Hornet 900 and the like are tuned for midrange so that setup makes perfect sense for them.
