Default How bad is it?

First off, hello to all you fellow SV owners & lovers.

Right, I've just been cleaning up my bike (2000 SV650S) and found a worrying crack where the radiator mounts onto the engine block. How bad is this and how much do you think it'll cost to repair?

Cheers,

Saucerboy

Just had a look at mine, and it's really only a steady for the bottom of the rad.

Either someone has been over-enthusiastic about tightening it, or possibly it's a result of a minor drop.

In all seriousness if it was mine I'd remove the bolt, clean and ease the crack using a hacksaw, and fill it with epoxy (Araldite). When set (24hrs), run a drill through the hole if necessary to clean out any epoxy, and be gentle tightening the bolt. A spot of black paint and you'd never know.

If worried otherwise, simply pick up a replacement cam cover.

It's intuitive to think "If tight is good, tighter is better" but it's wrong. Another good argument for using a torque wrench. Otherwise we tend to overtorque small bolts, and undertorque things like the rear axle nut.

Not sure about the curvy, but on the pointy there should not be a nut on the end of that bolt, as it is a threaded hole. Looks like someone broke it long ago...I wouldn't be too worried.

I've probably got a cam cover that colour in the Heap'O'SV... Not 100% but I think so.

Does the rear cover have the same casting? If so, just swap 'em, job done. Dead, dead easy too.
