Default argh possible bike death...

My bike may be in need of a costly trip to the garage i fear... so im running it by you lot first

basically i've had a problem with it about a months ago see... http://forums.sv650.org/viewtopic.ph...068&highlight= but it seemed to clear up.

Today i went to preston for a meeting (it was particularry cold and wet), I've jsut got back now. Now on the way back when i got into blackburn i started slowing for a mini roundabout and went into 2nd, when i put the power on it felt like i was in 4th. I assumed that i hadn't changed down enough and dropped it down again which was into first and it struggled and seemed to pop back to normal power a few seconmds later. The effect is like being in a high gear going slow. It kept doing this all the way back and when i stopped it dropped from 1.5 rpm which is normal to .5 and kept moving about.

I just kept the revs up with the throttle and it started to smell like something (i assume my clutch, even though it was completely in) was going to explode. Got it home but i don't really want to use it which does get me the rest of the day off work :P but i'll have to get the bus until its sorted...

So any ideas?

Thanks

Matt

My first thoughts are FI or ECU problem. Could also be an electrical issue but I doubt it.

I'm sure others will be along shortly, but I'd be taking it down the garage if I were you.

Sorry.

It was cold and wet and the bike lost a lot of power. Have you fitted a fender extender and / or sealed the front plug up with silicone grease? The fron't plug's a known weak spot on some SV 650's for getting wet and not sparking.

Yup - I'd check for water around the plug in the front cylinder - causes the plug to short against the casing and you go straight from 650cc to 325cc. The hollow sound may well be the cylinder turning without the fuel igniting. Loss of power would point to the same thing too.

I have the same problem with my curvy SV - popped out the plug and coated everything in WD-40 until the Fenda Extenda arrived in the post.

Golden rule - check the simple, easy stuff first...then move onto more complicated possibilities...

It does sound like the front cylinder is flooded, especially since you mentioned that your bike got serviced recently. First thing first is does the bike sound different, you almost as if it is only firing on one cylinder?

If it is flooded you need to get the water out, WD-40 does that magically. Pop the front spark plug out, there are several posts how to do this on the forum. Use the WD-40 with the red nozzle in there and you will start seeing water + WD40 coming out through a little hole on the right side of the engine (I bet you were wondering what that hole was for didn't you?), Get the nozzle stick in that little hole and spray WD40 until you get all of the water out. Plug the spark plug in and voila.

It takes about 15 mins if you know what you are doing. The spark plug removal tool is in your toolbox that came with the bike and one of tricks is not to remove the rad, you can undo the faring and bottom bolt and move the rad out of the way to get to the spark plug. And don't overtighten the spark plug! Please read and search the forum before doing anything, it is a rather simple job. And get yourself a fender externder, cost about 10-12 quid (I think I paid 12 for mine) and they do help prevent this happening again in the long run.

i had this was the coil to the back pot

ran on and off for a while i'd put it down to crap fuel from dodgie woolie back petrol station

the smell i had was the cat in the can cooking to a white hot state due to the miss fire
if it is this its not to bad

k5 650s £29 squid dealer part or £10 off ebay
if your sure it is the coil i have a couple i could bung one in a jiffy bag for you if it works you could
just send me the tenner later

and now the cats fecked bike runs way better more responsive and seems to breath better

Many thanks all im going to take a look at it tomrrow if its not ****ing it down. I assume if it was cause the plug was wet once it dries out it will be fine to ride again? If it is that i'll drain it and buy a fender extender.

Again thanks alot
