Having just removed my bar end weights to fit my vstrom hand guards (nice), it occurred to me, what exactly do they do ? Is it to damp vibrations ? Or do they somehow aid cornering ? Has anybody ridden without them, what effect did it have? Just interested you understand.

They help to damp vibrations a little and it's something to take some of the shock if the bar hits the ground.

Don't listen to him.
They're to help keep the front wheel down on the road. Fill the front tyre with helium and you'll be a wheelie God! I jest... |

The same happened to me, I was riding my bike down to my nearest bike workshop for storage, and I felt one bar felt shorter than the other, never thought any more of it, and didn't even notice anything missing. that is until I went to pick it up, and the guy was like, u know your missing a bar end, I mean if someone is stealing it cost they've dropped there's they could have at least put their trashed 1 on my bike, tht ****ed me off like crazy

They do occasionally fall off, btw.
I replaced the internal bits with rawl bolts, so mine aren't going anywhere. |

they reduce vibration, different weights have different resonant frequencies, so different bar ends give different damping.

I had one fall off when the bike was about 3 weeks old. I did check it occasionally.
The ones I have now get checked once a week and I've never been able to move them. |

They... weight the end of the bars...
To stop vibration, I have some crash bar ends on my other SV and the bars do vibrate a bit as they are made out of hardened plastic. |
