Default Spare Keys - do you carry yours around?

I was out on the weekend and a friend of mine mislaid his keys, he had a spare hidden on the bike, for obvious reasons I won’t go into what bike or where. I was wondering if the general view was to carry your spare with you, wherever you go.

Please can you explain to the rest of the planet (except Mogs' mate), how on earth is keeping keys with the bike a good idea?

So then if you lose the 1st one you can easily get your spare and start the bike. I wouldn't do it though, imagine trying to explain to your insurance that your bike got nicked with the spare key.

Trust, me, where this was hidden, you would not find it by just feeling under fairings for a key taped in place, I doubt they'd even find it when breaking the bike for spares! (NB, no, I'm not the friend in question, I was merely present - don't go trying to steal my bike :P )

Mogs: I have been thinking the same thing. My only concern is that in the event of the bike being nicked (even if it's picked up and put in a van, rather than ridden away), the insurers will want to see where the keys are and will try to weasel out of paying if you can't produce them. The answer would be to get a duplicate key cut, as well as your "official" spare and hide that on the bike (after testing it works of course!).

In my case, this would mean requesting a duplicate alarm/immobiliser fob (which I'm not even sure it's possible to do) too and hiding that.

You've answered why it would be a bad idea... now, the good part?

Why would you explain to your insurance that your bike got nicked with it's spare key? The bike is gone, you tell them it was probably lifted into a van or hot wired...not rocket science.

Yes, keeping a second key is a very good idea. I usually keep it in my pocket but have always thought about putting it on the bike. Just haven't given it enough thought. We're not talking about sellotaping it to the tank people... Putting it somewhere that can't be seen unless you're underneath your bike with your head at an odd angle.
