By all accounts, urban myth. They do still exist, just they're hard to find. I'll dig out a link later on...

Yes & no. Thermic Developments Ltd made it, and stuffed Nescafe inside it. Nescafe labelled it (because they already had a brand name) and sold it at profit, passing money back to TDL for more cans.

The pre-trial cans were all hand made, and this is where the urban myth comes from that they exploded. They didn't. What actually happened was that the heat chamber in some of the hand made ones wasn't made right, so it cracked when you pushed the button. Pressure built up until it was enough to throw quick lime & water out the bottom of the can. Nice.

The later ones, still made by TDL, were made in a proper production line, sponsored by Nescafe. However, consumers complained that the cans (called "Hot when you want it") weren't hot enough. So 9 months later, Nescafe pulled the line for fear of law suits.

I started a thread on it a while back, which jim@55 pointed me towards RocketFuel, and I did a lot of digging around afterwards. I loved those "Hot When You Want It" cans, and bought one pretty much daily Damn complaining consumers!

Hopefully RocketFuel will sort out their distributions.
