Default Which Service?

Bikes now just tipped 7.5k and its 3 years old. Does that mean it needs the 7.5k service or the one due after 3 years? It hasnt yet had the tappet clearances checked.

The dealer serviced it upto the 4k service in 05. In Winter 06 it had the oil, filter and spark plugs replaced and the K&N air filter inspected.

This year its having the same done as well as new brake lines, coolant replacing, all hoses inspecting

Everything is checked on a 6 monthly basis anyway at least, usually anything is identified during washing/cleaning because i like to keep on top of stuff.

Service schedules are written as either mileage or time dependant, which ever comes first.

Cheers Mark.

Right so it needs everything doing then. Throttle valves, PAIR system valve clearances etc

I think that the general consensus would be to go with the mileage. I know if I were to buy a used bike I'd be looking to make sure the service's were carried out at the appropriate mileage rather than the age of the bike.

Mine has had yearly services as im doing between 3 & 4k a year. I cant see the need in replacing Oil after 1500 miles

The spark plugs are also changed every year as for the amount they are, its not worth trying to clean them etc etc.

Spent a couple of hours yesterday removing the cowling, changing spark plugs checking leads and changing antifreeze. Gonna remove the brake lines today and also change the oil & filter.

Im looking to check the tappet clearances this time around but looking in the service manual it also says to carry out Throttle Valve Sync. Do people do this themselves and have the required tools?

I also think i need to get a compression gauge for testing the cylinders

The way i approch servicing is to do a lot of it from home, the oil filters, plugs, fluid change, air filter ( have K&N fited to negate that anyway), grease points and tourque settings of the various bolts and screws.

I think Bike servicing is a bigger rip off than cars. especially as the intervalls are so close. I have had mine serviced by a dealer up untill its 15,000 point, even though it has only done 10,000.

From now on i am only going to take it to them every 2 years for the valve clerance and a 15,000 service. As i will be servicing it in between myself. Looking at a Haynes manual and a Suzuki dealer CD ROM on maintenance, it is scary how little a dealer will do fo the money. the 4K service is a joke, mostly visual checks and things you can do yourself in an hour. IMO once a year combine the 7.5K and 12K jobs and do it yourself, even TPS adjustment, then every 2 years to a dealer for a big service.

I am also changing the brake lines for SS ones in the next couple of weeks so no need to take it to a stealership to have the hoses replaced at the 4 year point as stated in the service schedual.
