Rear Caliper

How the **** do u get the pins out and in of the rear caliper? the pins are like the sliders that go through the pads, ul know what i mean if u have changed ur pads. How do u get them out and in on the rear caliper? Iv manage front fine, but cant do rear. Iv got new pins to go into so dont mater if i **** up ones already in there.

This is a common problem and quite often will require you to drill them out....try lots of patients and lots of force.... took me and my mate about half an hour to get one out.

You may have to be prepared to drill.. but as people will tell you... be VERY careful. And also, the rear caliper splits into 2 don't forget (incase you do need to drill)

if you split the caliper you will need a new gasget, i had the same problem a week ago. I just got several drill bits 1-4mm and located the back of the pin (rear of caliper) drilled hole and then put a nail in the hole and hammered the pin out. No damage to the pin, two small holes in the rear of the caliper incase i ever have to remove the pins again.

Time 30mins.

I split my caliper to change pads and didnt replace the gasket, no leaks, back brakes working fine, but the drilling method is better in the long run.
Once you get the pins out put some copper grease on them to sptop it siezing up again.

Buy a spare on ebay, I've got a few of these as they're common with the older GSXR models that I owned. Rebuild one and keep it as spare.

what? u mean buy a spare whole caliper? how much are they? so are 99 GSXR calipers the same?

ebay for about £25- or less if you're lucky. Rebuild it and slap it on and then keep the original as spare after you've re-built that.
The '99 fits, but not sure about the 2000, etc

I just split the caliper, cleaned up the pins a little, changed the pads then rebuilt it with the original parts, worked just fine. I'm planning to get a replacement at some point but how often do you change your rear pads?

The problem is the pins are pushed into blind holes with no real way off pulling them out, and what happens when all that s**t get flung on them - they stick.

I did what echomadman did - Take off the caliper and drill a 2.5mm hole in the back such that you can get at the back of the pins - easy as the caliper is cast from a fairly soft alloy. the pins are about 5mm in diameter so there will still be a good seat for them.

Then take a small round nail, place it in the hole and tap it with a hammer to push the pins out from the other side. Once done make sure you give the pin ends a liberal coating of anti-seize compound before putting them back.

Thats wot I did and it worked fine. Next time there's no need to remove the caliper to tap out the pins.
