I'd like to give them a try and see if the benefits outweighed looking like a freak and having people throw things at me and laugh as I rode past...

Why would you do that? A mirror isn't like a TV screen with an image on it. You look into a mirror. Your focus on something 10 yards behind you in a mirror is the same as it is for something 10 yards in front of you.
