Default Modern shops are just backwards!

I really don't understand the logic. Seriously.

J&S (amongst others) give a discount for purchases online. The stock (in most cases) is packaged and shipped from the store that I would be in if I were buying it in the store. Yet I get a discount for causing someone more work!

Also, if I'm in the shop, I'm more likely to buy more than I initially wanted (impulse purchases etc).

So by me buying online, they loose potential add-on sales, and give me a discount for causing more work for some poor bugger.

That's just wrong!

Sorry, had to rant

Let me get this right, you're grumbling about having saved money by not having to go out to a store and getting a further discount fr sitting at home to do your shopping...

... and you say the store's got it backwards!

Baph, some stores will price match the internet prices if you take a print out along with you and ask nicely.

Yeah!

The specific instances I'm referring to, were times when I've been out in town anyhow, and been into a shop.

Case in point, J&S. I went for a ride out to their Northwich store, purely because it was a sunny day & I had nothing to do, and the roads are pretty decent.

I'd had a look on their website a couple of days before this & seen what their prices were like, but didn't perticularly desperately need anything, so didn't bother.

When I got there, I'd sort of talked myself into getting some luggage. Can I have the oxford pannier/tankbag/tail pack deal please? Certainly. Can I have it at the online price? Nope. What?!?!

OK then, sod it, I don't need all that, so I'll just take the tank bag by itself, can I have that at the online price? Nope. Bugger, oh well, not that much of a saving on that, I'll take it anyway.

So they lost out on quite a bit of money, by not giving me the discount they would of done if I were at home.

The reason for starting this thread is because I've just seen the link by timwilky to PowerSport bikes (IIRC) in Bradford, for their servicing costs. I might be tempted to get a Dyno run from them at some point in the future, because I have family out that way. A detour to Bradford isn't a big deal. Perhaps even on the way back from the AR.

Will I be able to get a discount on their stock whilst I'm at the store for a Dyno run? No, it'll be cheaper for me to come home & buy it, then wait for it to be delivered.

Makes no sense at all.

If less people use the shop and more people order online then less monkeys are needed to guard the store, so it's cheaper. They'd rather you just bought online and never went to the store. Simple.

I don't mind the internet shopping thing, but things like that, where you need to try it on before you know if it's right, why the **** should the customer be "punished" for making sure it's right for them?

Pure madness gone mad I tell's the!

Online discount + P&P usually makes it roughly the same cost anyhow. The shop doesn't get the P&P, the courier does. Doesn't affect the customer much either way, but the shop could benefit indirectly by the customer being physically in the shop.

How many times have you been P'd off by a sales guy trying to push more stock into your arms than you came in to buy? That's what they're trying to do, generate more sales! You can't do that if the customer buys online!

Just seems to me like they're shooting themselves in the foot by tempting the customer to stay away from the shop.

A lot of cases show that you make more pick-up sales from internet sales. Works like this: Oh, it costs £7 to deliver. Better get your money's worth- might as well get some other stuff at the same time.

But here's another reason. With a physical shop, there's a certain base number of sales that you get through geographic location, especially if there's weak local competition. These sales tend to be pretty price insensitive- if you're the only Arai dealer within 50 miles, then you're going to get every Arai sale that wants to get one from a physical shop. If you discount, unless you discount to the same extent as the best online price, you're may not make significantly more sales but you will take less profit per item sold.

So what these guys are trying to do here is get the best of both worlds- get the fairly price insensitive local sales at a higher price, and the very price sensitive national sales. It might work, it might not
