Smile fueling question, upgrading specifically for FI benefits (re-mapping)

I'm a gs500 owner currently, but have decided the sv650 is my next steed. I want fuel injection, and I want very smooth torque. I don't give a rats ass about 20,000 rpm horsepower rates. My gs is serving me quite well, but I want to take the missus out more often, and a little more torque would be nice.

So-

1) is there any specific year models of FI sv's that are better than others ?
2) is there any reason to believe a carb'd sv might actually be smoother ?
3) is remapping something you would recommend, and if so, where can I find a few to play with until they fit for me ?

Thanks guys, I'm way over here in the US, but I hear you folks know quite a bit about the sv's , and love em rain n shine.

Ride on !

Hi there and welcome.

I'd just like to jump in and point out (no pun intended), that power delivery on the pointy (F.I.) model can be very smooth when properly set up. See the following guide....................

Cheers,

1) Nope..they're all very much the same (03-07 bikes are fuel injected)

2) Strictly speaking no....as posted above if you get the injection set up so it kicks in sooner its supposedly much smoother in low revs. You also dont have the hassle of carb icing/cleaning /fouling /worn needles etc.

3) Afaik the standard mapping is very good... you could get a power commander to up your mpg or hp by a few....or you can get the existing ecu "teka" mapped by anyone who does it. My own preference would be the power commander route as if the map done is not ideal you can just disconnect it and go back to standard. More expensive though.

Hope that helps

Having ridden several of both carb'd and FI sv's I'd say there's not alot to choose between them in torque, the FI unit isn't very sophisticated, so if you're keeping it standard I wouldn't mess with it, on the other hand if you're planning to do a full exhaust system/filter change, then get it dyno'd with the re-map.

Cheers Mark.

The FI's a little sensitive to setup as's been said. When it's bad, it's pretty rotten, though not Fazer thou rotten. But when it's good, it's about as good as the carbs are Carbs have their own foibles of course, but I'd say by and large with the SV the carbs just come out ahead. The FI model makes more power, but that's from the revised cam setup.

Buy the one you like the shape of best

Did I not hear that the FI on the SV is a bit 'cheap' and 'nasty'... So u tend to get away with a lot more on the carb'd?

i think the powercommander option is best if ur doing pipe and filters etc.... i heard that if u get the ecu remapped then its bit hard trying to get it back to its origanal setting. dunno if ne 1 agrees

I'll not be changing anything at all. Ever.

All I've changed on my current and soon to be replaced GS500 were:

Oil
Tires
Brake Pads.

I don't want an expensive habit. I want a commuter, with spot on fueling, reliability, and comfy ergos. Give me EVERYDAY fun on the way to work, and I'm happy.

Thank you all for the responses. I'm FI really FI looking FI forward FI to FI fuel FI injection FI here.

(hardly subliminal message)
