Don't know if this has been posted before. Not so sure myself. I think diesel powered cars are great, it's unlikely I'd go back to a petrol powered car again. the lazy style, and punchy mid-range suits a car (and me) perfectly. But is diesel really needed on a bike? Weight is not an issue, and a petrol bike engine can be tuned accordingly. A H-D vee engine is in a very low state of tune, and so has diesel like characteristics. Plus you can get high mpg out of a bike (depending on riding style of course). Discuss.......... |

Weight is key to a bike being fun. Diesel engines require a much stronger and usually heavier construction than an equivilent petrol engine, if you add on the additional weight of a turbo-charger any engine is going to be a fairly chunky piece of kit.
So, sounds perfect for a lardy cruiser style bike! |

Yep, have a look for a dutch bike called the 'Startwin Thunderstar' if I remember correctly it uses a 1.4 litre diesel VW lupo engine, producing about 80bhp and 165 foot pounds of torque

I like the engine design, perfect for an everyday ride with low maintenance, powerful enuf to get out of its own way. a mill like that in a adventure bike would be more my style.

I was aware of the Army trialing a diesel twin in its old armstrongs a few years back. Allegedly they were awesome but failed due to reliabilty issues.
A phrase used was - they could climb a vertical wall if they could get the grip. |
