Default Shifting Problems

Just bought my new sv650s and drove it for the first time yesterday. i think it was awesome that the ODO read 0 miles. lol anyways i was driving it around and shifting fine, and then for some reason i couldn't get it out of 2nd gear... i tried shifting up and down but it just wouldn't go. its very possible that since this is my first time driving a bike that i did something wrong. i drove it back into the garage and began to fiddle with it to shift, and it would seem to go through the gears, but it didn't register on the gauges.

If you received a bike with 0miles/km on the odo, that bike has not had a full Pre-Delivery Inspection. Part of that inspection is a ride! I was pretty gutted to see 4 miles on mine when I got it, but I'd of been more concerned if it read 0.

It could be a sticking gear lever/pivot. It could be that the gearbox is new & needs a little TLC.

With the engine running, put pressure on the lever in either direction, and let the clutch out a little (to just before the bite point).

Also, take it back to where you bought it from & get them to do a proper PDI on it!

yeah i figured that they should have done some type of testing of it. i'm going to give them a call today and see whats up, i'm not even sure if they fix the bikes they sell, seems like it was mostly a retail business...

since i've only ridden the bike for about 15 minutes i can't remember if you are able to start it up and just shift through all the gears without even moving, and if that is supposed to show up on the gauge?

Do American SVs have a gear indicator? UK SVs don't have anything to tell you what gear you are in. There is a green Neutral light to show when the bike is not in gear (in neutral).

What do you expect to be shown on the display / gauge?

Have you tried http://svrider.com/ ? It's a US based site and folks on there would know more about the gear indicator.

Sometimes new gearboxes are a bit tight, kinda like the engine is (hence the recoomended method of running in). I remember when I went out with my dad as a pillion after he got his GSXR600K1, he'd only done 100miles and the bike got stuck in third gear as we came to a stop; he managed to get it back into first and it never happened again.
