Default Advice on 'TOOL' please

Only just come across a few tracks by this band, although I understand that they have been around since the early nineties!
Must say that I quite like what I have heard.

Anyone on here a big fan/expert? If so, what/which album(s) do you
recommend for my collection? Cheers.

Not a fan really as I haven't heard most of their stuff but I have the Lateralus album, it's a classic.

They are quite possibly the best band in the world.
Albums in order of my preference are:

Lateralus
Aenima
10000 Days
Undertow
Opiate

I can second a few of those earlier albums. Aenima is awesome, and "sober" on Opiate is ace. Stinkfist!! I forgot stinkfist, that is a brilliant song!

oh wow now there's ablast from the past! I used to be a big fan in the 90s, saw them play a few times and they are nuts!

I've only listened to Undertow & Opiate though so can't really comment on recent stuff. And warthog's right - 'Sober' is a great track

Ok, Tool fans, what do you think of Maynard's other band 'A Perfect Circle'?

I gotta say that for me, seeing as his voice is so distinctive and is such a defining feature of the band, it's a great opportunity to hear some more of him. The fact that they also happen to be a modern 'supergroup' with some very talented guys goes down well too. More radio-friendly stuff but still very good, specifically with reference to the Thirteenth Step and Mer De Noms albums.

Tool are always up there in my most played list, I would recommend starting with Lateralus as I think it is their best album. Aenima is good too, 10,000 Days has it's (very good) highs and (filler) lows. The earlier 2 albums are still good, just a bit under-produced/sludgy to show their full potential I think. Great band though, never since Keith Moon have the drums become an almost melodic instrument that stands out in a band in my opinion.
