my k5 is 2 years old in july but it has only done 1100miles.
question is do i get it serviced by the dealer and get a stamp for about £80 or buy the correct oil and genuine filter and keep the reciept (for records)and do it myself? |

You bought your bike the same time as me did exactly the same mods, exhaust etc but you've only done 1,100 miles......... I've managed to clock up 30,000 in that time.
I'd say get a dealer service but i'm nuts cos i still get mine dealer serviced depite the milage. |

I'd just go out and ride it instead

I service my bikes myself and keep the receipts. It's cheaper and when it comes to selling the bike any biker will understand why you've done it this way.

Change the oil, I wouldn't bother with the filter. Oil goes off over time so you'll need to change it. You're more likely to end up having hassles with bits not getting used enough - tyres going off (5 years) petrol stagnating or battery dying if it's not ridden enough - than you are to need things checking for wear and tear.
The £80 is for the peace of mind and the stamp rather than actually doing anything of value/use to your bike. |

I'm about to do my 2 year service DIY,
Dealers are quoting in the region of £170-230 all for an oil change (not filter) plugs and many inspections. Bike is now out of warranty so that wont be affected. And besides its laughable for an engineer to send a bike to an engineer to do some work! Just need to get hold of some carb balancers! Oh btw, I bought all the kit inc an NWS stand, and im still going to save over £50 on the cheapest quote. Last edited by injury_ian; 29-05-07 at 12:47 PM. |

7000mile service DOES NOT include the valve/shim check anyway!
The 15000 mile service deals with that check! To do everything including a valve check, my local dealership quoted £160 all in. You guys posting about £230 etc are suffering from daylight robbery! I service my own now, and I find it hard to beat dealership quotes just buying my own oil! If I was quoted at £230 for just an oil change, the person on the other end of the phone would be greeted with the sound of the phone hanging up! Takes all of half an hour max (taking it slowly) to drop the oil & put new oil in. Buy the expensive oil at £31 for 4ltrs, and you're talking £400/ph roughly! The inspections to the bike can be done whilst the oil is draining out the sump plug. Last edited by Baph; 29-05-07 at 01:38 PM. |
