Well, yesterday I got a rolloking for taking my time over a piece of work. Not one to shirk responsability my response was along the lines of "Well, there's a number of reasons I could give, but I don't feel there's any point as it'll just be viewed as excuses, so I'm happy to just draw a line under the whole mess & you can monitor my progress on future pieces of work."
My boss then pressed for details on the reasons, so I told him that basically other people hadn't done their job, and my work was reliant on their work being available and working correctly. I was right, this was apparently an excuse. Ho hum. Business politics. Today arrives, and I'm given a piece of work to sort out, and again, I spend 3/4 of the day banging my head against a brick wall, because the previous persons work isn't complete. Not only am I finding bugs in their work, but I'm also having to litterally complete it for them (despite them signing it off!). Yes, you guessed it, it was my boss that supposedly did the work for this mess I've been dealing with today. So I've just had a nice slanging match with him across the office (in earshot of a few other developers). Yup, wrong to have a go at the boss in front of collegues, but I'm not taking the hit for taking my time when clearly others aren't pulling their weight. Time to start actively looking for work me thinks... ![]() |

Heh. For anyone that knows OOP, a little update on the ranting.
We have a UI (websites), a business layer, and a model layer. With me? The UI should talk to business, to verify "can the user actually do this with business rules?" who should then talk to the model to say "set this to that." I'm now told that because the work I'm fixing is so old, I don't need to bother talking to the business layer, just go direct to the model. WHAT THE!?!?! Best practices firmly out the window. If it wasn't for the fact I have bills to pay and a family to support, I could well find myself taking an extended leave! Anyone know any company within "reasonable" commuting distance of Anglesey looking for a Java Developer? |

Personally I think you should take a few deep breaths, get through the day and go for a nice relaxing ride - not a fast one, a relaxing one.
Where you work seems, from previous posts, to actually be quite good. Dont let a hump like this get in your way. If you see the attitude to be a continuing problem, start documenting everything and setting up paper-trails, generally watch your back. Failing that, instead of Java Programmer, why dont you see if North Wales Police has any vacancies for Bike Cops :P

![]() The problem here is something that I've always heard others complaining about, but has only happened to me the last couple of weeks. No amount of complaints before have changed it, and common consensous amongst the group is the same with regards the boss. Higher management, yes, great, we're treated well. However, they also take the word of superiors to us lowly code monkies above anything else. I've been here almost 2 years now, I was starting to think of looking for fresh pastures anyway, maybe this is just the push I need. |

That'd be my advise. I bitch about my work, but truth be told, anywhere that lets you work at home 60% of the time and pays for you to ride your bike on company time 15% of the time can't be all bad.

Yes, I **can** work from home, but I generally don't. |

I was thinking the other day about my current workplace & the thought came to me:
If I went postal - how long would it take anyone in the organisation to notice overall productivity had decreased??? The first people would notice is when there's suddenly a load of clean spoons in the kitchen in the afternoon due to the lack of cups of tea/coffee being made. But the penny would only drop after a week. The cleaner would probably notice first that there would be less mess to hoover up. |
