Fitting Fabbri DB - not a good fit

I've had a go at fitting my first shiney thing and it's not proved as easy as I hoped it would be. I've had a go, PM'd some peeps for advice and at the suggestion of one I'm posting a pic here and asking for any further wisdom.

The pic below shows the inside of the screen at the top. The rest of the fitting isn't brilliant but i can live with it, however this bit is so far out that I can't get the original screws to bite at all, and I'm concerned about leaving out fixing points, they are there for a reason after all.



I did see a mention of cutting inside fairing lug that the screen fouls on, not sure I want to do that yet. If I could find some longer screws to fix it that would be a start, of course if there is some trickery that someone knows, that'd be even better.

I took some photos today, which might help. As I said before in my PM, I haven't cut the fairing lugs, I managed to get the original screws to 'bite' after squeezing the fairing quite hard together. It looks like yours is more loose at the front which makes the top have a larger gap where the screws go.

Thanks Law. Your fit is very similar to mine, just you've manged to get those top ones to bite.

I was scared to squeeze any harder in case I broke the screen. But I can have another go.

The fit is quite loose at the front - but I don't know how to get it any tighter. Screwing the fixing screws up tighter seems to squash the rubber washer part of the 'thing' but doesn't seem to clamp the screen up any tighter. That might be my fault though - I lube'd them to get them back in so maybe they don't grip in the fairing properly now - didn't think about it at the time.

thats not too good is it? you would think a company like fabbri could manage to make a screen right, e mail them and tell them your problems.

I fitted the exact same screen and had the exact same fit, 10 mins with a rotary file in a drill to grind the holes almost double the size on the screen to fit the black plastic through and jobs done. looks like it was factory fitted.

That's quite an ingenious solution.

I am not terribly keen on modifying the screen or bike. At least that is my default mental position. I think I perhaps need to try and change that attitude a bit, as it's not as if mine is factory fresh and in mint condition.

Making the holes larger risks weakening the screen. Modifing the inside plastic risks making the original fit poorly if replaced. But I'm wondering about slimming down the profile of the inner lug (those ribs) combined with a light modification of the screen? Arguably the worst of both worlds. Guess I need to get the screen off for a decent look and measure up. I have at least found my hobby drill now.

Honestly I was the same - not wanting to butcher anything. Until I fitted an undertray, the hugger for the wrong SV (now it fits) and exhaust in the period of a week. Now anything goes as long as it works looks good and functions.

It's not going to be that weak if you widen the holes IMO and you still have the other fitting holding the screen in place. Also it is only a SV650, not Rossi's M1!

It seems everything I touch becomes tatty. It might just be that most things I touch I own and as I don't replace something till I have to some of the stuff has been knocking around for a while.

I was really keen to start afresh with the SV. Keep it spick and span. However it's looking like that just isn't to be. After I got it I realised that some mods had already been made (tail tidy & exhaust) and it was missing a screw here, and now another there.

Rictus made a good point at Fox's diner the other day. After about 10k the value of a bike to a dealer declines (there's so many low mileage machines out there). So if I'm going to keep it for more than that, stop worrying and just ride it as it's going to be worth next to nothing anyway. That's also an argument for putting stuff right now, so that I get as much use out of it as possible.
