Smile Allow me to introduce someone.

She's been on the music scene since the early seventies. Originally dark haired, slim, attractive and clearly vocally talented, she became known as the 'mother of punk' in the late seventies.

To me, she resembles a rather cosmopolitan micro-village in one human form. Just about every video of her has her displayed as a different persona...a new visual impression each time she performs for her adoring public.

Her voice does not have the smoothness of an anglophile nor a black singer. It has a rich vibrancy and staggering range, a gutteral harshness, often manic, sometimes struggling, often impressing - leaving you at times wondering how she will negotiate the next part of the melody.

Never boring - she has a large cult following. Definetely not mainstream she is not for the faint hearted. She needs to be approached with an open mind. It's no use switching off half way through the first number...listen to half a dozen...or more. If you're still not convinced about her vocal ability or are perhaps concerned that she may send you to the top of the banana tree, just watch perform Fever on Youtube. Captivating the audience within seconds, she has little difficulty in stamping her own mark on this well known standard.

The woman incidentally, due to her obvious multitude of apparent personalities and ability to reinvent herself at a stroke of the designer's chalk, is clearly completely barking (imho). In the eighties she shocked people with some of her antics. She mellowed in the nineties. She is still alive and well, and fills the concert halls. Her wild eyes along with her facial plasticity ensures you remain captivated, and perhaps a little bemused.

I was not aware until recently that I could actually enjoy any of her musical offerings. I'll listen to anything from Apocalyptica (cheers LynW)to ZZ Top (I know, sad isn't it)...including all genres. But for some reason, although I was aware of her existence, I never bothered to cast my ear in her direction.

For me she gets ten out of ten for longevity, for reinvention, for devotion in what she believes is her contribution to the perfoming arts, and for just being.

Ladies & Gentlemen...
