Pointy Rear Brake Binding Cleaning
My rear caliper was binding because it was caked in crap. I didn't come accross any photos for a pointy so here we go. (my method might not be quite right but it seems to have worked) Here is the caliper attached. I undid the rear caliper mounting bolt with a 12mm socket. The caliper then pivots on the front mounting bolt. There is only one pad retaining pin. Mine was seized so i didn't force it and risk destroying it. ![]() As the caliper pivots up the brake pads swing down. There is no retaining pin at the back but a metal clip that the ends of the pads rest on. If the pad retaining pin is not seized then it would be really simple to drop the pads out to change them. ![]() I sprayed the caliper thoroughly with halfords brake cleaning fluid (£6). The crap just dissolved and ran off all over the back wheel - put a cloth down underneath the caliper!! The pads now were really easy to move. I levered the piston back into the caliper with an allen key. Be careful not to damage any surfaces. If you've previously topped up the brake fluid, then it may overflow as you push the piston back. I put a small amount of copper grease on the pin to try and stop it seizing again, but i don't think this will really help. Be careful not to get any grease on the pads or disk!! ![]() I put a dollop of copper grease on the back of the pad to prevent brake squeal. Then pushed the pads onto the metal clip at the back, lowered the caliper into placed and replaced the rear caliper bolt. It took a few pumps on the brake pedal to get the piston back in position. Because the brake was binding and getting hot i think it has boiled the brake fluid which may need replacing/bleeding, because the pedal feels a bit soft. ![]() |
