on a more useful note, do you mean the S or SM version? there's not much to watch for with them, mechanically sound. apparently the magnesium engine case is very easy to put a hole in if you drop it, people recommend adding an ally cover, also the rad is a bit exposed, but that comes with the type of bike that it is, you can also get protectors for that.
the supermoto one is nothing short of hilarious, huge grip, very composed suspension on roads like the island ones, ful of potholes and it's not unusual to find covers recessed 3-4" on corners. back roads are where it shines, avoid motorways (although it will buzz along happily and there is still some poke left at 60-70mph) and you'll have a blast, works well in town too. tall seat height might not be ideal for folks with short legs. lots of mods available including plenty that give it a noticable (supposedly) boost in power. tank range is pretty poor, as is luggage space and general practicality, but then you've got to expect that really from a bike like this. it's a weekend fun toy, not a mode of serious transportation www.thumpertalk.com is the place to go i borrowed one while my SV was in for service, liked it so much i bought one, but watch out, it turns you into a hooligan ![]()

it also depends what you want to use it for, the S version as you say in the threat title, is heavy and underpowered for any fast paced off road work, but great for learning.
E spec has more power due to different carbs and weighs less get covers for the engine casings they will break easyily. other than that, great bullet proof engine, good at its job. but its not a 400mx bike |

Never been off road riding except for a 20 min taster at the NEC last year and ever since i've fancied one. Obviously not going to be a demon with limited ability but just want something capable. The bike ive looked at is a 2001 s version which has done about 50:50 offroad:road riding. Apparently the plastics are a bit rough and the bike hasnt been used for 18 months although it does work/start. What you reckon on a figure for something like that? Its got no MOT/Tax obviously

The DRZ is a good starter bike go green laneing. for a bashed up 01 thats been stood I wouldnt pay much. I bought by 01 E spec for £1500 last year in the summer and it was in good condition with less than 4000 miles.
there are lots on ebay so have alook for the going rate on there. you might even be able to pick on up with supermoto wheels thrown in. ![]() have fun! |

Pencil, you're probably right. I thought it looked a good price as there are loads out there around the £1600 mark but if its been stood, is a bit scruffy and needs bits & bobs to get it through the MOT I think i'll just give it a miss. It always gets to autumn time when I start thinking about going offroad!
