The speed sensor went on my bike last night. This is the second time it has gone. But this time the remains of the rotor has welded itself to the inside of the sensor. I now need to replace the whole assembly, but suzuki are now closed for the christmas.
Click on this here link to see 3 pictures of the damage. |

The pic is not very clear to but looking at the state of the surrounding area , I would suggest some sort of maintenance issues JMO .

What sort of maintanence issue? Do you mean dirt? At no point in the manual is there a check or change specified for any part of the speed sensor assembly.

To me it just looks like the sensor as eaten itself, mainly done by not installing it correctly in the 1st place (Which i done) At the time i didnt know that you could buy the magnets and just brought a secondhand sensor from a breaker, job done
The sensor should not 'just fail'. Other than being an electical fault. |

If you've recently had a new front tyre fitted then this may be the cause as tyre fitters are well known for incorrectly refitting the speedo sensor. Just a thought...

From the photo and what you said in the other thread on the subject, it looks like they've managed to pinch the rotor on top of the castellations, then torqued it all up, squashing the rotor. Bet you're glad your bearing had a seal on that face, eh? This is exactly why the rotor's so fragile, if it was tougher and they'd done that it could easily have damaged the wheel.
Someone on SV Rider makes a rare-earth magnet pickup setup, mainly for use with front end swaps, but IIRC it may be cheaper than a whole speedo drive. It looks a good bit of kit. You need a spacer to replace the drive as well but that's not hard to do. I'm trying to get an actual price for the kit, I'll post it up here if I get it.

If you do go for the rotor setup that northwind has said, i dont think you would need to get a spacer. Its unlikley that the metal peice inside the rotor housing is damaged, that is the spacer. You could probably just clean out the housing and put it back snip the wire off then install the alternative kit.
