Default Restricted SV or something smaller?

Ok first of all apologies for starting a thread that has been kinda covered lots before but I just thought I'd be a bit selfish and ask the question I need answer instead of reading through all the previous threads.

I am hoping to pass my test on the 17th and then when I get paid at the end of the month I'll be getting a bike. I'm 20 so it will need to be <33bhp. I have been doing a lot of looking and around but now I'm not sure what to do. Do I get a 650SV and restrict it or do I get a smaller bike? Any opinions would be good? I'm just worried the restriction will it make it perform strangely

(Does anyone know roughly the 0-60 time for a restricted SV650 is??)

If you intend to ride legally, i.e. under 33bhp then I wouldn't go for a restricted SV, in my experience they're horrible when they're restricted! The 0-60 is probably something like 7 or 8 seconds though.

Its a good bike to have restricted, its still got a bucket load of torque. 0-60 time is probably around 5 to 6 seconds, certainly no more than that. Its still a fairly fast bike restricted, you can keep most normal cars at bay, and it'll max out fast enough to lose your license.
I'm going to put naked gearing on mine when the chain and sprockets need changing for a little bit more acceleration.

Bearing in mind the unrestricted sv will make it to 60 in 3.5 or thereabouts, I'm 17 stone and six six and the sv hauls to 60 in a shade under 5 seconds realistically. If your smaller than me, it'll go quicker. I hit about 105 down hills with a full tuck too, but if you're reasonably sized it'll do 110 if its faired. I considered getting something smaller, but in all honesty the sv is perfect in town and torquey enough to be restricted and still haul ass up to about 90. I'd go for it, I couldn't have wished for a better bike. With a 60 profile front tyre and a bit of clutch you could uturn it quite easily, and town work will be a doddle especially with all that practice you're getting with your manouevers I passed second time about 7 months ago, btw.

mines restricted and its grate. mine will do 110 on a flat if there is no wind granted im only 8.5 stone but tht is every thing std and and with the 33bhp. my dad rode my SV before it was resricted and he says now it is a completly diff bike. i went straight from my RS50 to the sv and havnt found it any problem. the thing i found when looking for a second bike was any thing around a 400 was the same price as the sv, an insuring them was the same so i went for the SV. (Im only 17 so any insrance is steap)

hth

scott. (GET THE SV)

Matey good to see you on these forums! Get an SV, you know they are one of the sexiest bikes out there, and from what i've heard they do perform resonably well for restriction and are quite forgiving for a first big bike. (no experiance yet)

It's your choice end of the day but you can pick SVs up resonably cheap, rather than paying out for a smaller bike then getting a bit bigger and bit bigger every so often.

good luck (SV )

Indeed the restricted SV is a ridable bike! 0-60 around 5-6 seconds (depending on your size) which is very admirable! Do about a tonne Five on a good day maxed out.

It will be an ideal bike to start out on!

David Essex^^ was right till 2 weeks ago when I got the falco. Now that is indeed the sexiest bike on the planet

Don't know why Larry had a bad experience with a restricted SV
IMO they're great, I bought one & had it for a couple of weeks before I knew it was restricted and it wasn't my first big bike (was only mildly disappointed with top speed of 108 - no complaints about acceleration IIRC) This was a Pointy with the proper ECU restricted.

Go for the SV mate, two years on a restricted licence will go quicker with a bigger bike. Plus with the SV you can mod it to your liking as there are plenty of after market parts available, if you are into that sort of thing.

What a load of rubbish, a restricted SV is a great bike and the addition of the torquey engine will be a benefit over smaller bikes. From what I have seen the Curvy seems to react better to restriction than a pointy (both using Suzuki restrictors), i don't know why but in a drag race it just has the edge, in the real world it makes no difference as both a basically the same bike!

The restriction only restricts the high end Horsepower levels... the SV gets most of it's power from low end grunt which isn't restricted so much.

I had mine restricted at first and had no problems with it! Managed 109mph tucked in, on a slight downhill... and it's plenty fast enough on acceleration.
You can feel that it's not giving all its got, but as a new rider, it's probably for the best at first
