Hi there im looking to do the service on my bike myself as i think £150 from a dealer is a bit expensive. What do i need to do an oil change on it ie i know i need the filter for the bike but what oil do i use etc?

Use a 10W40 semi synthetic motorcycle oil, hein gerricke are doing one for £14 for 5L at the minute.
You'll need a socket or spanner of the right size to remove the drain plug, and preferably a torque wrench to tighten it up again to the required strength. You should probably replace the crushable washer as well. The oil filter should only be about £5-10, you only need to do it up hand tight when putting on the new one. If the old one is a bit stiff coming off, use a strap wrench or an oil filter wrench: ![]() Last edited by lazymanc; 21-04-09 at 07:00 AM. Reason: Was hein gerricke oil, not halfords for £14 |

Get yourself a manual, it will tell you all that is needed. Also any torque settings.

IMO buy OE parts from dealers.
Oil Filter - £10 Sump Washer - £1.50 Castrol Oil 10w40 4litres - £24 |

Yeah as said it's just a matter of getting the right bits. Although uhm, £150 for a basic oil/plugs/filters service is a bit steep.. go elsewhere as my local Suzuki/Yam dealer is £50 an hour labour. And it's 1 to 1/2 depending on how nice you are
![]() Either way get a Castrol Bike oil in 10/40w if you're going to do it yourself. Most bike dealers use this as 99% of bikes use them anyway. |

Should the plugs not be replaced along with filter, oil and washer?
