Why does it not apply to motorbikes?,after all a decent motorbike costs the same as a small car. Many people who work in cities and others on low incomes use them as their primary source of transport.

because in order for the government to make a profit on each new car sold in taxes the value of the new vehicle must be more than ~£7000

Because they want Nissan Honda et al to reopen their factories and start making cars again. They also want Ford Jaguar and Vauxhall to not close their factories.Whether any of it will work is another matter-----????

The only cars its worth using this for is the small and alegedley 'heco' freindly things
ie £2000 off a £7000 car and whatt hey are hopeing is that people will trade in old smelly volvos and mercs and buy c1's and clios you will get better than £2000 off for most big cars anyway so i can't see this actually working as expected and they wont do it for bikes cos they don't like us (unless they run a £1000 if you want to swap for a small scooter or 50cc bike) |

I can't see it being a big success because people with >10 year old cars aren't the sort of people to go and splash out on a brand new car.

Agreed, plus the cost of such cars is likely to rise for those who can only afford 10 yo+ cars. If I was in the market for a new 'eco' car and had a nice little car about 5 yo I'd sell that private, buy an old banger for £500-£1000 to get £2000 off price of my new car. Many folks doing this will drive up the cost of 'bangers'.

There's obviously going to be exceptions. I'm not sure if it will shift the amount of cars they think it will. But my brother, (19) has been driving an old golf diesel that was once my dads, then mine, now his, and has saved IIRC 2,495 on a new Kia Ceed. It would have otherwise gone to the scrap heap for 60 quid! It worked a treat in Ireland...mainly becuase the roads were fuill with dangerous, non-tested vehicles.
